Only five teams are left in ‘The Amazing Race 17’ as they race their way toward one million dollars.
Last week Chad and Stephanie got engaged during the race and managed to finish the race first. It was a good week for them.
Greg and Mallory had navigational problems last week, fell behind and were eliminated during last week’s race.
‘The Amazing Race’ episode 9 – Recap
‘The Amazing Race’ 17 sent competitors from Al Alam Palace in Oman to Dhaka, Bangladesh, one of the most populated city in the world.
Once there, they had to find a sugar press, run the sugar cane through the press, and one team member had to drink the sugar cane juice. Sounds like a good energy burst!
In Bangladesh the teams were met with two detour choices: balanced meal or balanced bricks. If they chose to carry bricks teams transported 100 unbroken bricks from a nearby brick barge to a work cite while balancing them in a basket on their heads.
In the balanced meal detour competitors had to pick up 30 lunches to men working on a boat. This had to be the easier of the two detours.
Following the detour there was a u-turn, which allowed a team to turn back another team and send them back to complete the other half of a detour. Jill and Thomas, who had half a day lead on everyone played the u-turn on Brook and Claire to try ad slow their momentum.
This u-turn was a little different. It was the first time in the history of ‘The Amazing Race’ that a u-turn could be used twice. Meaning more than one team could use the u-turn to help level the playing field.
The next stop was a roadblock in which competitors had to assembly a bicycle rickshaw before receiving their next clue.
The Pit Stop for this leg of the race was at Lalbagh Fort in Bangladesh.
How the teams competed on episode 8 of ‘The Amazing Race’ season 17
Jill and Thomas
Jill and Thomas worked tenaciously and persistently to get the last seats on an early flight to Bangladesh. They arrived early, found the sugar cane press and got to work. The completed their detour and played a u-turn on Brook and Claire. Jill threw together a rickshaw, ad Jill and Thomas finished this leg of the race easily ahead of the others.
Nick and Vicki
Nick and Vicki pulled ahead by making a connecting flight through Dubai. They ended up with a slight advantage landing in Bangladesh behind Jill and Thomas, but before the other teams. They were neck-and-neck in the competition. They reached the u-turn first, but Vicki elected not to use it to push anyone any further behind because they felt they had enough of a leave. What a great show of sportsmanship for Vicki!
Brook and Claire
Brook and Claire made it to Bangladesh and through the sugar cane task as easily as anyone else, but they were turned back to complete the second detour because Jill and Thomas chose to use a u-turn on them. At least it is evidence that other teams view Brook and Claire as serious competition.
Brook and Claire had hope because they knew that Chad and Stephanie were behind them, but Claire really had a hard time with the brick carrying task. It really wore her out and Brook had very little patience.
Nat and Kat
Nat and Kat tried to find an earlier flight to Bangladesh, like the res of the teams. They went to Bangladesh via Dubai, but saved no time at all doing it that way. They ended up on the same flight with the rest of the teams.
They used a u-turn on Chad and Stephanie. In retrospect I’m sure they can see it would have been an entirely different game if Nick and Vicki had used the u-turn on them. There is no way they could have finished when they did.
Nat and Kat made easy work of the detours, but had a difficult time assembling the rickshaw.
Chad and Stephanie
Now that they are engaged it makes it a little more interesting to watch Chad and Stephanie in ‘The Amazing Race’ 17. If they are able to pull their act together, like they did last week and win the race it would be a great way to start their relationship.
Chad and Stephanie chilled out at the airport and did not allow themselves to get into a frenzy over finding an early flight. They may have wished they had handled the flight differently when they got completely turned around in Bangladesh, which is not unusual for these two.
Then, to make matters worse Chad and Stephanie were u-turned by the doctors, Nat and Kat.
Talk about irritable. This really ticked Chad off.
Chad and Stephanie caught up to everyone at the rickshaw task, and Chad enjoyed talking smack to the doctors the entire time.
Winner of week 9, of ‘The Amazing Race 17.’
1st place – Jill and Thomas
2nd place – Nick and Vicki
3rd place – Nat and Kat
4th place – Brook and Claire
5th place – Chad and Stephanie went from first place last week to last place during episode 8. Their biggest set back on this leg of the race was the u-turn slapped on them by Nat and Kat, but that is the way the game is played. Chad and Stephanie were eliminated from the race.
