Snoop Dogg burst on to the music scene when I was about five years old and one of the reasons I started to listen to rap was the Nuthin’ But a G Thang music video. It’s been kind of odd to see Snoop transform from the target of censors and parent groups to a family man and mainstream, dare I say, pop artist. He’s had a long storied career and although he never topped his debut album, Doggystyle, not many other rappers have either. Even after all these years he’s still revered in the rap community. There were a lot of songs to get through in order to narrow down the list to ten but I did it and even included a whole bunch of others as an honorable mention for your listening pleasure. Ok, so here is my list of the best Snoop Dogg songs. You may also enjoy reading: Tupac Best Songs and Top 35 Nas Songs.
Drop It Like It’s Hot– With a clicking beat supplied by Pharrell, Drop It Like It’s Hot was a huge hit for Snoop Dogg. The song features a rather catchy hook to go along with that awesome instrumental and some nice rapping from the Dogg.
Beautiful– Another Snoop Dogg and Pharrell collaboration that is really laid back and smooth. Beautiful is a nice change of pace that shows Snoop has some versatility.
Doggy Dog World– It’s a crazy mixed up world.
Murda was tha Case– Snoop makes a Faustian bargain to save his life and achieve all of the goals a gangster would have. Murda was the Case is one of my favorite rap songs of all-time not just of Snoop, the beat is absolutely chilling.
That Shiznit– That Shiznit doesn’t always get brought up with his more popular songs but frankly it is one of his best songs ever.
What’s My Name– This track opens up with an extended use of the vocoder and a funky ass beat then Snoop proceeds to tear up the mic and makes sure you know what he’s all about.
Gin and Juice– Who doesn’t remember this song if you grew up during the 1990s? I mean the music video played on MTV constantly and the house party he throws while his parents are away is classic.
Vato- The instrumental for Vato is crazy and the song features B Real. This is more recent than other entries in the top ten but I can’t leave it out Snoop does his thing on this.
Deep Cover/187– The title track from the Deep Cover soundtrack that was just an amazing piece of work from Death Row. Cause it’s 187 on an undercover cop.
Ain’t No Fun– A group track off of Doggystyle which is quite filthy but still funny if you have the right sense of humor. Not for the easily offended but then again what is?
