Reading to your children allows you not only to spend quality time with them but helps to stimulate their imagination and develop early reading skills. Here are my favorite bedtime children’s books for children five and under.
The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton
This funny story is great for young children who are having trouble going to bed. Animals on an ark go through their silly bedtime routine.
Pajama Time by Sandra Boynton
Another funny tale about animals getting ready for bed, this children’s book makes the routine of getting into your pajamas more fun.
Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann
This children’s book has few words, but great illustrations to tell the story of a zoo watchman closing up the zoo for the night. A gorilla takes his key and let’s all of the animals out. Read this entertaining story to find out where all of the animals end up.
How Will I Ever Sleep in This Bed? by Della Ross Ferreri
My son had a hard time transitioning from a crib to a big boy bed, and this book was a lifesaver. The author tells the story of a young boy fearful of sleeping in a big bed and how he uses his stuffed animals to feel safe.
The Napping House by Audrey Wood and Don Wood
A delightful picture book, the authors use repetitive words to help tell this funny story. The entire household, animals included, try to sleep in granny’s bed.
How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague
Mommies and daddies struggle to put their dinosaur children to bed. Parents and children will both recognize the tactics some children use to not go to bed in this silly bedtime book.
Time For Bed by Mem Fox
Beautiful illustrations of animals lovingly putting their little ones to bed accompany this sweet story. This children’s book is very mellow and soothing, the perfect book to read at bedtime.
Good Night, Little Bear by Patricia M. Scarry
This is a silly bedtime story of Papa Bear looking all over for Little Bear to put him in bed.
Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
Bear is hibernating in his cave during winter when he is joined by other animals from the woods to escape the cold. This children’s book is beautifully illustrated and there are several other cute stories in this series.
Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney
Big Nutbrown Hare and Little Nutbrown Hare go back and forth about how much they love one another in this adorable children’s book.
