During the third trimester women often go through a period known as, “nesting.” The expectant mother will have a sudden burst of energy. She will clean, fold clothes and prepare the perfect environment for the upcoming baby. Doctors view the mother’s actions as normal. During this exuberant time period, mother often enjoy the process of shopping for the baby in preparation for its ultimate arrival. Often a baby shower will be thrown to help the new parents accumulated needed items that they may lack. Each small item is greeted by the new mother as a treasure and a valued part of the nest preparation.
Here are ten ‘must have’ essentials that all mother should purchase prior to the new babies arrival.
Diapers seem like such an easy item but many new parents hold off purchasing them until the baby is born. New dads often rush out to buy the diapers before they bring their wife and baby home. Place diapers at the top of the preparation list. Research which brand looks and feels the most comfortable for a newborn. Brands really do differ dramatically. Purchase at least two boxes so there is no reason to run to the store once the new baby is home.
First time parents often make the mistake of purchasing elaborate (often expensive) outfits for the newborn. Many babies outgrow their outfits before they even have a chance to wear the new clothes. Most newborns detest getting dressed and will wail in protest. The new parent often becomes frustrated with the tiny buttons, bows and ties. Purchasing easy onesies will be appreciated by the newborn and the new parents will come to relish the ease if simply slipping them on. They make changing a diaper a breeze.
Buy soft, newborn blankets in various weights. Buy heavy blankets for cold nights and soft, lightweight ones for warm days. A newborn adores being swaddled tightly in a blanket so a new parent can never have too many. The baby may spit up on the blanket, a diaper may leak or milk will spill so having numerous blankets will help to calm a fussy baby.
4) Car seat
Research car seats in advance of the babies arrival. All care seats are not created equal. Review the safety information on each one. Consider how quickly your child will grow. Many seats will accommodate a newborn as it grows so the parents will not be faced with purchasing a new care seat in a couple of months.
5) Burp Rags
Tiny rags to catch the inevitable spit up of the newborn are a necessary accessory that all new parents should have on hand. Burp rags come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, textures and colors.
An infant bathtub that is made especially for a newborn. Many new parents think they can bath the baby in the sink but this can be a dangerous practice. Infant bathtubs are specifically designed to offer support to a limp newborn and help hold him above the water. A first bath can be stressful occurrence for many parents but over time most babies begin to adore bath time and the soothing feel of the warm water.
7) Infant Soap
Choose a mild infant soap that will not sting or burn the babies eyes. Many varieties are available that are gentle on a newborns delicate skin.
8) Diaper rash cream
A wide assortment of diaper rash creams exist so research the best ones. Ask friends and family prior to the babies arrival which one they recommend. Most new parents feel they can purchase the diaper rash cream if it occurs but a mild rash can erupt in the middle of the night and cause the newborn discomfort. Having an adequate rash cream on hand will help sooth the baby and relieve any unpleasant rashes before they have a chance to become bad.
9) Infant Thermometer
A newborn can be fine one minute and burning up the next. Always have a newborn thermometer on hand to promptly take a baby’s temperature and report to the pediatrician immediately.
10) Wet Wipes
Wet wipes are handy for more than simply cleaning a baby when changing its diaper. A wet wipe can help remove spit up from mom or dad when necessary. Most parents begin to depend on a wet wipe as an ultimate life saver even as the baby becomes a toddler or preschooler. Consider purchasing a wet wiper warmer to help make the baby happy during a diaper change. Nothing is worse than an ice cold wet wipe touching warm baby skin.
Having a baby is an exciting time that requires preparation and thought. It can also be a fun experience for both parents to enjoy shopping together for those last minute purchases.
