At 57 years young, I cannot recall a midterm election that has been as contentious as this one. With the current selection of media coverage and the type of ads being run by the candidates one would think that the only choices available for the voters this election cycle is between a Tea Party Candidate and an Ultra-Liberal. Surely there must be some races that have a moderate democrat running against a moderate republican. Why is it we seem to hear only about the extremes and almost never about the middle-of-the-roaders? Is it simply because these races aren’t sexy enough to garner any attention?
Listening to NPR this morning, they spent some time discussing the Senate race in Nevada where the Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is in a hotly contested battle with the Republican Tea Party candidate Sharron Angle. The newscaster echoed a concern of mine that today’s political races seem to be much more about slamming the other candidate than promoting their own agenda. University of Nevada political communications expert Joseph Valenzano stated, “The one determining factor for who’s going to win is going to be about who has effectively made the election about the other person.” What has happened to voting for someone because you support their ideas?
Has marketing permeated our lives so completely that everything needs to be some type of strategic choreographed dance complete with hand picked sound-bites that never ventures into truth, justice and the American way? Should I be voting for someone just because they are not as bad as the other guy? Have we really stooped this low? As much as it seems that we are being pounded with ad after ad claiming that this person will tax and spend you into oblivion or this person will cut your Social Security and Medicare, just how much of this is really the truth?
I know that there are candidates out there that are running upstanding and respectful campaigns that are issues oriented and fair and accurate – I just don’t know where. I am puzzled that we wonder why our youth votes in such low numbers when we indoctrinate them by running ads with such levels of pomposity and disrespect. If you were them, would want to get involved in this mess? I know it’s more than I can take, how about you?
