Week 1 of the 2010 NFL football season was full of upsets and surprises. I ended up with a 9-6 prediction record, which I’m satisfied with since the first week of the season is hard to predict with all of the uncertainty.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17, Cleveland Browns 14 – My Pick: Tampa Bay
This game went pretty much as I expected it would. Cleveland built a lead early, but ended up losing the game because of costly turnovers.
Miami Dolphins 15, Buffalo Bills 10 – My Pick: Miami
The only thing that surprised me about this game was that the Dolphins only scored 15 points.
New England Patriots 38, Cincinnati Bengals 24 – My Pick: Cincinnati
This game surprised me, not just the fact that the Patriots won, but how they won. They came out and dominated the Bengals early, and it was never really a close game. New England showed that they are not going to give up their AFC East title without a fight.
Houston Texans 34, Indianapolis Colts 24 – My Pick: Houston
As I predicted, the Texans came out and made a statement by beating the Colts. The big surprise came from Arian Foster, who had a monster game with 231 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.
Jacksonville Jaguars 24, Denver Broncos 17 – My Pick: Denver
I figured this would be a close game that could go either way, and David Garrard came up big for the Jaguars by passing for 3 touchdowns. Tim Tebow made it into to the game, but did not make much of a contribution, with just 2 rushing attempts for 2 yards.
Pittsburgh Steelers 15, Atlanta Falcons 9 – My Pick: Atlanta
The Steelers picked up an ugly win in overtime, with Rashard Mendenhall ending the game with a 50 yard touchdown run. Until Pittsburgh gets Roethlisberger back, they will have to rely on their defense and running game to win games, which they did this week.
Tennessee Titans 38, Oakland Raiders 13 – My Pick: Tennessee
As expected, the Titans dominated the Raiders. Chris Johnson picked up where he left off last year, running for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns.
New York Giants 31, Carolina Panthers 18 – My Pick: New York
Hakeem Nicks came up big for the Giants, catching 3 touchdown passes to help New York win their first game in their new stadium.
Chicago Bears 19, Detroit Lions 14 – My Pick: Chicago
This game ended up being a lot closer (and lower scoring) than I thought it would be. Calvin Johnson and the Lions were clearly robbed of a game winning touchdown reception at the end of the game, with the refs citing some ridiculous rule and calling it an incompletion. Johnson understandably thought that catching the ball, coming down with both feet inbounds with full possession of the ball, and then getting a knee down was enough to make it a complete pass. Apparently receivers need to lay on the ground for an extra couple of seconds in the future, so that the same fate does not befall them.
Arizona Cardinals 17, St. Louis Rams 13 – My Pick: Arizona
The Rams played a good game and almost came away with the upset victory, until Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald caught a touchdown pass late in the game to give the Cardinals the win.
Green Bay Packers 27, Philadelphia Eagles 20 – My Pick: Green Bay
Green Bay held off a rally by Michael Vick and the Eagles to win their season opener. Vick replaced Philadelphia’s starting quarterback Kevin Kolb, who left the game at halftime with a concussion. It was not all good news for the Packers, however, as they lost Ryan Grant for the year to an ankle injury.
Seattle Seahawks 31, San Francisco 49ers 6 – My Pick: San Francisco
Pete Carroll’s first game as Seattle’s head coach was a resounding success, as the Seahawks blew out the 49ers. San Francisco’s biggest question going into this season was Alex Smith, and his performance in this game was lackluster. The 49ers are going to have to play much better if they want to compete for the NFC West title.
Washington Redskins 13, Dallas Cowboys 7 – My Pick: Dallas
The Redskins took advantage of sloppy play by the Cowboys and got the upset win over their NFC East rivals. Washington will have to play better on offense in the coming weeks if they want to continue winning, as they were unable to score an offensive touchdown this week. Dallas will have to cut down on their mistakes if they are going to live up to the high expectations that many people have for the team.
Baltimore Ravens 10, New York Jets 9 – My Pick: Baltimore
The Ravens prevailed in a defensive battle that was precluded by lots of smack talk from both teams. Anquan Boldin was a standout for his new team, with 7 catches for 110 yards in the Baltimore victory.
San Diego Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs – My Pick: San Diego
Kansas City got the huge upset win over their division rival San Diego, bolstered by a 56 yard touchdown run by Jamaal Charles and a 94 yard punt return by Dexter McCluster.
