Here is the 2010 week 7 unbiased college football rankings discussion following week 6. Follow how the UNBSD rankings have changed after the final 2009 rankings from ESPN. If you get the method, then you get the madness. This eliminates the biases by only using how things have played out on the field (that’s why they play the games).
This has now become the week of turmoil for the top bowl series teams. Ohio State decided not to keep the pageant crown and since Wisconsin lost to Michigan State earlier in the year, I guess that means the Spartans should have been #1 the whole time. Go figure. Good thing the UNBSD rankings are not a BCS pageant.
Boise St gets to go back to the blue turf and has Lousiana Tech who outscored the Broncos in the 2nd half last year and also gave LSU a scare 24-16. Also, it’s the Horned Frogs vs the Falcons but the Frogs are the favorite. Air Force couldn’t get out of the hole they dug against the Aztecs and they go play in a potential World Series environment.
The Ducks get (from their perspective) what must be the hazard of not playing–Oklahoma jumping them (and the Utes for that matter) to hit #1 just for clobbering one of the worst teams in the Big 12 after Utah did it the week before. While the Sooners get all the poll love, Mizzou looks to take their biggest step of the year (beating the same team LSU did was not one of those steps) in front of the Mizzou faithful. Missouri’s closest game this year was against the Aztecs who could be considered the Oregon St of the MWC–lots of close games but not enough wins.
Auburn pulled out all the stops to get over the Razorbacks after both teams were throwing the kitchen sinks at each other. Now it’s Tigers vs Tigers (guess you don’t bring in the “Let’s go Tigers” chant). LSU got in a good stay-sharp game but lost a bit of ground to the Sooners. Alabama gets to stay waiting in the wings (8 in the BCS standings) as they take on the Vols.
The Okies get the Cornhuskers who got shucked (yeah, I wrote it) at home vs the Longhorns. Nebraska may get their poll love back if they win their next two games. You’d think that the polls would put the Michigan State Spartans and Auburn Tigers at #1 and #2 for beating teams (Wisconsin and South Carolina) that beat the former #1 poll teams but I guess that might be too logical for a pageant.
As you go from the unbeatens to the one-beatens, it comes down to how they lost and whether it road game or a home game. Having said that, Florida St must feel the most tortured whenever they look at the teams that have almost beaten the Sooners this year. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see Florida St vs Virginia Tech after that auspicious start by the Hokies-then if VT wins, would that propel the BS Broncos into the BCS championship game?
11 West Virginia 5-1 lost to LSU @ LSU 20-14

Stanford has lost to Oregon two years in a row now but if the Cardinals get by both Washington schools, they’ll get a chance to see how far they’ve come when they play Arizona in the first weekend of November. Iowa meanwhile, after losing to Arizona in AZ a few weeks ago, gets a chance at redemption by trying to do what the Buckeyes couldn’t in playing the Badgers in WI. “THE” Ohio State now gets a feisty Boilermaker team that stifled Northwestern and beat the Buckeyes last year away from Columbus.
Kansas St took out their woes on the Jayhawks and will play an up-and-coming Baylor Bears team. Then we get into the two loss teams. I guess you can look at them as the how-good-were-your-losses category. Honorable mentions go to Air Force and South Carolina. Last week, the Gamecocks were better than the Tide but since Alabama is no longer in the top 15 of the UNBSD rankings, their win is not as impressive (but it sure was fun to see the Tide get kicked around by someone other than the Utes).
