The FDA has little to no power over the sell and usage of herbal supplements. It is up to the consumer to understand what is safe for him/her to take and what isn’t. This means one should do a bit of research before believing any hype about any herbal product.
Recently, on the Dr. Oz. show, Dr. Oz gave his opinion on three of the most dangerous herbal supplements, three that he said he would never take. They include:
Last year alone, $21 billion dollars was spent on products that contain bitter orange.
Bitter orange is mostly sold to help one to lose weight or to help relieve allergies.
However, this herbal product can have an effect that is similar to another diet supplement that the FDA banned, ephedra.
Bitter orange can cause strokes and heart attacks that can lead to death.
Lobelia (asthma weed)
Lobelia is sold to help relieve asthma and bronchitis.
It can cause rapid heart rate, heart attacks, coma and even death.
Yohimbe can be an additive in many sexual enhancement type products.
Last year alone, products containing yohimbe made over $14 billion dollars.
It can cause rapid heart rate, heart attacks, and even raise one’s blood pressure.
What is really scary about this herbal product is that often you will find that it contains chemicals that are equal to prescription strength medications.
The side effects that one gets from taking yohimbe are long lasting. In fact, the side effects can last as long as 20 years after taking the drug.
Yet, these are only a small number of some of the herbal products that can be dangerous. If you would like to know more about the dangers of herbal products check out the consumer report on the matter, which did an intensive study on a number of herbal products.
