Have you ever suffered from procrastination? I can say for a fact that I have countless times. We’re not alone. Millions of people suffer from procrastination all the time, but not everyone takes the time to find ways to prevent it from getting in their way or becoming anything big. Procrastination is usually effected by a little laziness, so it’s alright if it happens once or twice, but not right before a big presentation or test.
Easier said than done, it’s like getting out of bed early in the morning mid-winter. Impossible? Seems like it, but of course it’s really not. Stop telling yourself “I’ll do it later” or “Maybe tomorrow.” You never know what you will have thrown at you and your schedule, so if you have the time to do it now, do it now. You’ll thank yourself later when you can prop your feet up worry free knowing that your job is finished. That is when you can really relax, and not have your conscious wearing you down.
Set a Deadline
Give yourself an ideal deadline when everything has to be finished. From there, create goal markers along the way. Think to yourself, “Okay, I have to finish a three page essay by Thursday, today being Sunday. I’ll start out today by doing all the research, and then a page on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, giving me Thursday to proof read and complete it.” Not only should you reach your goals, but don’t be afraid to strive to over achieve and do one and a half pages on Monday and possibly finish it on Tuesday. Make sure your goals are realistic, and you give yourself plenty of time to do it, otherwise you will be less likely to reach them because you’ll be more reluctant to start working on it.
Treat yourself for all your hard work when you finish a job or task! You’ll feel even better about completing it, and you’ll feel more motivated to start another job. Depending on how big the job or task was, go out and buy a new outfit, go to a nice restaurant, or see a movie with some friends. It’d be a ton of fun and it’d be a great way to celebrate.
While procrastination may not always be completely unavoidable, there are ways to beat it! Procrastinators can be really hard to deal with and be around, so make sure you never become one.
