A few weeks ago, we hosted a dinner party for friends. Since I am a health and fitness coach, my primary goal was to prepare and host a healthy dinner party. What I wanted to do was have a delicious meal that was healthy at the same time. It actually took almost two weeks for me to plan the right dishes, purchase the best foods, and create a meal that our guests thoroughly enjoyed.
The following four questions are presented to help you to think about preparing the best meal possible for the people that will be gracing the dinner table:
1) What food allergies do my guests have?
It is not good to have someone become ill because of the food that you prepared for the party. Knowing in advance what allergies your guests have will help you in the planning process. Talk to your guests at least a week or so before the party and find out what foods will cause them any adverse reaction. Many people do not know if they have food allergies – be very cautious when preparing meals for them. A positive suggestion is to find a list of the most allergenic foods and make sure that your wholesome meal does not contain any of these ingredients.
2) What do my guests not like to eat?
There are many people who do not eat certain foods because they just do not find it appealing or they had a dreadful experience with them at an earlier time. At our healthy dinner party, one of our guests informed us he did not like chicken – it was a family thing. I designed a meal that did not include chicken to make sure each of my guests had an enjoyable experience. Take into consideration the likes and dislikes of the people who are at the party.
3) How can I help my guests combat their health issues?
If you know that your guests are managing health issues, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, asthma, or heart problems, your healthy dinner plans can include foods that will be beneficial to those concerns. A side dish of steamed vegetables can be a blessing to an individual experiencing high cholesterol or heart disease. Dessert that consists mainly of fresh fruit will be beneficial to someone who is diabetic.
4) What new foods can I introduce my guests to?
I introduced a surprise at my healthy dinner party – star fruit. No one had sampled star fruit before. It was a fun treat that went along with dessert and everyone found the flavor of this new fruit very appealing. Dinner parties are a great place to experiment with new foods. Who knows? One of your guests may find a new favorite because of your courage to introduce it in the meal.
Use these questions to plan a wholesome dinner party that is not only entertaining, it will improve nutrition for all present.
