When an NBA player’s spouse speaks, people listen.
LaLa Vazquez, wife of Carmelo Anthony, says the Nuggets superstar small forward would be happy to stay in Denver despite his offseason demands of wanting to be traded.
For the last seven seasons, Anthony has been everything for the Nuggets’ franchise, averaging 24.8 points and 6.3 boards a night. Unfortunately, Melo’s squad came up dry in its only trip to the Western Conference Finals in 2009, so he’s never stepped foot into an NBA Finals game.
Like other stars around the league, Anthony’s thinking deep and realistically about winning an NBA title if he stays in Denver because of superpowers like the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic.
Here are my four reasons why I believe Anthony’s wife LaLa actually shared us some insight recently, and he will in the end remain a Denver Nugget most likely the remainder of his NBA playing career. Please read, enjoy and drop a comment.
Despite the rarity, the word loyalty still exists these days. If Anthony wanted to be traded, he would’ve pressed the issue and forced the Nuggets’ hand by now. But that’s not Melo’s style. He’s remained true to his fans and the city through the difficult times. As long as the team keeps winning and moving in the right direction, Anthony will stay put.
3). “Mr. Big Shot.”
Great point guards are hard to find. Anthony’s currently receiving crisp passes from one of the best around, Chauncey Billups. Billups, 34, has won an NBA title for the Detroit Pistons and wants another for his hometown Denver. Despite speculation , to show Melo its committment to winning, the team won’t be unloading “Mr. Big Shot” before February’s trade deadline.
2). One player short.
It was only two years ago the Denver Nuggets went a franchise record 54-28, finished second in the Western Conference and advanced to the conference finals. No, the team’s present roster isn’t equipped to hoist an NBA championship trophy. But Zach Randolph, David West and Caron Butler may be a few potential 2011 free agents available.
1). Grass isn’t always greener.
Change isn’t always necessary. And as the Heat’s Big 3 are showing now, change isn’t always smooth sailing. Melo loves playing with current teammates Billups, R.J. Smith, Chris Andersen and Ty Lawson. Who wouldn’t? Anthony knows heading to the New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets or any other destination would be basically starting over but with actually more uncertainities than in Denver.
