With people trying to find ways to not spend so much money on Halloween decorating, there are ways to decorate for Halloween simply and cheaply. Not only are people trying to save their money, the mainstream decorations don’t fit into everyone’s Halloween theme.
Old white sheets and pillowcases found at your local thrift stores can be used to make ghosts as decorations and for costumes. Depending on the size of ghost you are wanting to make for your Halloween decoration will depend on the size of sheets to look for while shopping at thrift stores. Sheets and pillow cases can cost from $0.25 up to $2; maybe a bit more if they are being sold as a set.
If you find king size white sheets, you can cut them in half to make two ghosts per sheet. When cutting them in half, you won’t have to hem them. The ragged edges can give your ghosts a unique frayed look when hanging.
A blow up balloon style punch ball with a large rubber band can be used to create the round head of the ghost. The punch balls will vary in price from around $1 to $3 depending on where you buy them. The punch balls can be played with by the kids or saved with the sheets for other years when decorating for Halloween.
Blow up the punch ball to the size needed for your ghost and tie off. Add the large rubber band to the end it belongs on. Cut a small hole at the top of the sheet or pillow case. Thread the rubber band through the hole. Tie of the sheet of pillow case around the bottom of the sheet below the punch ball with anything handy like yarn, string, rope, or tape. The rubber band will be used to hang the ghost from a hook on your porch, ceiling or trees.
Monsters in the Yard
Use poster boards, coloring pages, sticks or something similar, and clear shelving paper to make monsters in the yard. This is another cheap way to create the Halloween yard decorations which cost $12 or more. For the same money you can make a variety of Halloween yard stake decorations for your yard.
Gradually enlarge the coloring pages onto a large enough sheet of paper, like newspaper, to the size of the poster board. Once you have the outer pattern large enough, you can trace around it onto the poster board. Using the coloring page as the premises of your monsters in the yard, fill in the arms, faces and other features from the coloring page.
The one thing about free handing the inside of the monsters, you can make your monsters in the yard scarier because they won’t be perfect like the ones in the stores. You can use markers, tempera paints or crayons to fill in the colors of the monsters.
Once you have the monsters finished on the poster board, trim them out. After having them cut out, use the clear shelving paper to cover the monsters for protection against rain or other wet weather elements. With what ever you have chosen to use to stick the monster characters in the yard, attach them with hot glue or duct tape on the back and stick in the ground.
Spider Lawn Decorations
Black lawn bags and wire hangers or sturdy wire can be used to make spiders and snakes for Halloween lawn decorations. If you are like most people, you have leaves galore you rake on a daily or weekly basis.
Rake the leaves stuff them in a bag to make the body of the spider. Tie the opening of the bag off and flip upside down.
For making the legs of the spider, place leaves or crumpled newspaper in them to make long skinny legs. You won’t want them to completely full like the body of the spider. They will need to be long and cylindrical. In the middle of the legs, tie off to make the bends in the legs. You will need to do this step eight times for your spider. The spider legs don’t have to look perfect either considering you are going for a semi to fully scary effect for Halloween.
If you are using wire hangers, cut several apart so you can use them to stake the front and back of the legs into the ground. You will want to stake the body of the spider to the ground so it won’t blow around and away from the spiders. The heavy duty wire can be used in the same way as the hangers.
If you want the middle of the spider legs bent up like they are walking, use whatever you have handy to place in the middle of the legs for the walking effect.
Using the same idea for the spider legs, fill at least two trash bags per snake. For the snake, put the tied ends in the middle of the snake for easier curving effect of the spider. To make them stay in place, use the same staking procedure as the spider.
