With the health of the planet becoming a more pressing concern on the minds of families and individuals, more people are rethinking the ways they do everything. Simple chores that used to include all sorts of chemicals, such as carpet cleaning, are now being approached in a completely different way; a greener way. Here are some great ways you can make your carpet cleaning approach greener, and more eco-friendly!
Believe it or not, but vinegar can be a very powerful aid in eliminating stains and odors. If your kids got crayon on the carpeting, or your dog had an accident, vinegar is well known for combating these stains and odors! You can put vinegar in a spray bottle and simply spray it over the affected area, scrub if necessary and then rinse! For tough stains or odors, you may need to repeat this a few times!
Baking soda is well known for absorbing odors and dealing with foul smells! If your carpet is smelling musty or could just use a little freshening up, sprinkle some baking soda directly from the box onto the carpet. Allow the baking soda to set overnight and then vacuum it up in the morning! Repeat as needed! Don’t be afraid to use larger amounts of baking soda if you’re tackling a particularly difficult carpet!
Ask any member of the older generations, and you’re sure to hear about club soda being used to lift and treat stains in clothing and on carpets! Club soda is a great alternative to harsh chemicals! Simply pour the club soda over the affected area and dab it with a white rag. Continue pouring and blotting until the stain is lifted and absorbed onto the cloth!
Warm Water & A Rag
If you simply spilled something, or your kids got into something they shouldn’t and tracked it onto your carpet, try a simple rag with some warm water. Get your rag wet and scrub the affected area of the carpet. If the substance spilled was liquid, first blot it up with a dry towel and then use a second rag, sopping wet, to help deal with any stickiness left behind. Use a third towel to soak up the water from the rag. Repeat as necessary.
If you’re dealing with greasy spills and splatters, sprinkle the area with cornmeal. Allow the cornmeal to sit for 5-15 minutes and then sponge the affected area with vinegar and water.
