Here are a 5 ways to live a more kind and cruelty free life. They aren’t rules to follow, but ideas to try to practice. Practice is a good term. No one is perfect and we shouldn’t get stressed out by trying to follow too many rules. People get overwhelmed and end up doing nothing. Do what you can do today. Think of it as suggestions to try but don’t beat yourself up over it. If everyone did a little better, think of the overall result! Don’t eat meat today, or turn the water off as you brush your teeth. The little things done by a lot of people can mean a lot.
Don’t Use Plastic Bags.
If you do use them make sure they get recycled. Why does this matter? Ask California about the Pacific Garbage Patch, this swirling mass of garbage floating off their coast. It is said to be the size of Texas. We need to work harder on eliminating plastic waste.
Choose Chemicals in your House with Care.
Look for products with natural ingredients and ones that have not been tested on animals. The longer the list on the label and the harder to pronounce the ingredients usually means they are not good for you or the earth. An inexpensive and effective alternative for cleaning products are baking soda and vinegar. Use herbs and vegetables grown in your garden. Always try to shop at local farmers markets. Look for organic products when available. Eat less meat. Don’t be wasteful, use your leftovers. Use the same rules for your pet’s food.
Turn Out the Lights!
Just think how dark it was a hundred years ago. To look at the earth from outer space what do they see? They see light! The whole globe is lit up. It will save energy and help the environment in other ways. Nocturnal birds that migrate have become disoriented. Sea turtles alter their nesting patterns due to bright lights. So be considerate when you light up.
There may be items that you have overlooked that can be reused. Take your ink cartridges in to be refilled instead of buying new ones. Purchase recycled paper for your printer. Check the fine print because they state the percentage of recycled content. The higher the percentage would be the better choice to buy.
Life altering changes take time. Concentrate on what you can do today. Walk more, drive less. Things like these will all help us live a more kind, and cruelty free life.
