“Desperate Housewives” is on its 7th season now, and while there has been a lot of excitement with this year’s addition of Vanessa Williams to the cast, there are also certain aspects of the show that could use some improvement. Here are 10 ways to fix “Desperate Housewives”:
Give Bree a job. Ever since Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross) was swindled out of her catering business by Rex’s secret son, Sam, she has been relegated to redecorating her house with her interior decorator/boy-toy Keith (Brian Austin Green), who is 17 years her junior. While this arrangement has resulted in some exciting scenes, it also begs the question of whether Bree will go on baking pies to fatten Keith up for the rest of the season, or will she come back with a vengeance and reclaim her company from Sam?
Bring back Katherine and Robin. Some of the most tantalizing scenes from last season’s “Desperate Housewives” involved the developing lesbian relationship between Katherine Mayfair (Dana Delany) and Robin Gallagher (Julie Benz). After all, who could resist enjoying Katherine’s dream sequence where she makes breakfast for a lingerie-clad Robin? Unfortunately, the couple moved away to Paris, leaving viewers with the much weaker homosexual couple Bob and Lee.
Give Bob and Lee a real storyline. Everyone just loves the fun and gay couple Bob Hunter (Tuc Watkins) and Lee McDermott (Kevin Rahm), who have no real purpose on the show except to make people laugh at their gayness (which is rarely, if ever, physically displayed). Rather than succumb to gay stereotypes and their subsequent one-liners, the producers of “Desperate Housewives” need to develop these two characters and give them an actual storyline.
Spay and/or neuter Tom and Lynette Scavo. Tom Scavo (Doug Savant) had just started school and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) had just started an exciting new VP job…and then Lynette found out she was pregnant. Again. Frankly, can anyone keep track of just how many kids the Scavo family has by now? Rather than throw Lynette into another season of being the harried mom, why not develop a different storyline around her, such as one that involves something other than reproduction?
Bring back Edie. Edie Britt Williams (Nicollette Sheridan) died a horrible “double” death in the 5th season of “Desperate Housewives”, exiting the show via car crash and electrocution. Obviously, the show’s creator wanted Edie off the show for good, a move which has cost “Desperate Housewives” some vibrancy. Time will tell if Vanessa Williams’ character of Renee Perry restores some spark to the show.
