Recycling can enter into your life in unexpected ways that may eventually become a fad and possibly even a trend. (Look at you: The Trendsetter!) Reuse all you can and you not only save money, but you get your brain into the habit of seeing things from multitasking perspective. (Alton Brown would be so proud of you!) Life is far more efficient and economical when you reuse in a unique way those possessions you already have than it is to buy new stuff that will eventually become obsolete or out of fashion. Although, it does seem as if everything that goes out of fashion comes back into fashion.
Recycling Idea: 1:
Don’t throw away those cardboard tubes that used to be paper towels. Slide those cardboard tubes down over spare fluorescent light bulbs and you’ve got added protection against breakage of these fragile messengers of illumination.
Recycling Idea: 2:
Exploit old boots for the storage space within. An old pair of boots (especially rubber rain boots and Jeremiah Johnson-esque hiking boots) can serve as an umbrella holder or cane holder or a place for young kids to keep tiny action figures.
Recycling Idea 3:
Old pantyhose can get new life in the kitchen. (So can new stockings, but that’s another matter entire.) Slide onions into the pantyhouse and tie a knot between each onion. Hang the onion hose on a wall and just snip the knot when you need your next big bulb of deliciously sweet Vidalia.
Crazy Mad Recycling Idea: 1
Don’t know what to do with an old refrigerator? Dig a hole in the backyard, place the refrigerator down into horizontally and use it to grow your own mushrooms or cover it up with dirt again and hide your most important valuables. (Note: Magic mushrooms might be considered valuables for some.)
Recycling Idea: 4:
A wooden ladder that has a broken run can still be useful. Suspend it from the ceiling and use it to dangle cookware in the kitchen or fashion accessories in the bedrom or just as part of a modern art mobile in the family room.
Recycling Idea 5:
An old garden hose that is of no use to you for watering can stilll play an active part in your gardening. Paint it to look like a regional snake and it will scare away some nibblers from your vegetable garden. Paint it to look like a rattler and place it on your front porch and it may even scare away potential burglars, thieves and Republicans running for office.

Those big pieces of styrofoam that come in shipping boxes can be glued to an old door to create a backyard pool raft.
Thank you, God, for not bringing back disco.
Bonus Recycling Idea:
Melt your old disco albums enough so that they are pliable and form a planter out of them for ferns and whatnot.
Recycling Idea 6:
If some cheney nocks that big honking mirror on your big honking SUV off while backing out or pulling in, don’t despair. Those gigantic mirrors can get new life applied to your house. This gives you the ability to watch kids playing in the backyard while you are in the front yard or to catch people walking to front door while you’re in the backyard yourself. You might also consider attaching it to your workstation so you’ll never be snuck up on from behind again.
