Auburn, New York, with a population of almost 30,000 is the home of Harriet Tubman (a slave who escaped and became a “freedom-fighter), John Walsh (from “America’s Most Wanted”) and many more significant residents. Almost five hours North and West of New York City, “Forbes” magazine, in October of 2010, listed Auburn, NY as one of the best small cities to raise a family. Below find some great activities in Auburn.
1) Curley’s Restaurant
Almost an institution in Auburn since 1934. It’s always been a family business that serves delicious, home-made food. A great restaurant for out of towners or locals. Call for reservations.
2) Harriet Tubman House
Harriet Tubman was a pioneer. She escaped slavery, and then fought for freedom for other slaves. A true inspiration, visit the house she lived in and learn more about her life.
3) William Seward House
“He shaped the Nation.” I studied this in school, so being able to see his house is a treat. Seward was the 12th governor of New York as well as the Secretary of State under Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He also helped “engineer” the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Take a tour in this historical house.
4.) Lake Country Winery Tours
Take a wonderful tour through this great winery. They can accommodate large groups if need be (up to 14). Limo bus service available.
5. Auburn Players Community Theater
One of the oldest theaters in the country, this is a great place to see some good, old fashioned community theater.
6.) Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center
They provide art exhibits, workshops and programs and have different events year round such as the Annual Juried Quilt exhibit. Open Tuesday through Sunday. Check website for times. General admission is $3.00 for adults.
Only about a10 minute drive from downtown Auburn, this suburb of Auburn has some fun stuff to do.
Mirbeau Inn and Spa
A wonderful place to relax. With plenty of different spa packages, for instance “Monet’s Palette” which includes either 2 fifty minute spa treatments (body scrubs, massages, manicure etc…) of your choice (or one 100 minute) and lunch in their “award winning restaurant.”
Stay overnight at their gorgeous Inn. Wonderful architecture and pristine gardens await you. Very French.

Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce (website) sells gift certificates for over 400 businesses, so a great gift for locals as well as a tourist visiting Auburn and Skaneatales.
