My Little O reported from the 88th Precinct Community Council meeting on October 19th that the previous month has indeed seen a relative rash of violent crimes in the Fort Greene / Clinton Hill area compared to the same period last year.
From Sept. 21st through October 19th of this year, there has been a 70% increase in reported crimes, including “Kids on kids” crimes, late night muggings, theft of unattended property, and one murder.
Almost paralleling this rise is a rise in arrests, though at 56%, falls short of the rise in crime. Deputy Inspector Anthony Tasso, Commanding Officer of the 88th Precinct, was quoted by Little O as saying “we just haven’t arrested the right people [yet].”
The precinct reportedly has taken a number of steps to address the problem, including increased patrols, community warnings, and engaging with school administrators.
The next precinct meeting is scheduled for November 16th.
