Getting your family to eat healthier isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible! With small changes such as switching fat dairy products to light or fat-free versions of the same thing, you are cutting the calories in half. But fruits, vegetables and grains are just as important as lowering the fat content of your meals. Here are nine ways to get your family to eat healthier foods.
Half Beef, Half Turkey
When you are planning on cooking with ground beef, try using 1/2 ground beef and 1/2 ground turkey instead! Find the leanest ground beef and turkey you can and they won’t be able to taste the difference! Only you will know how much fat and calories you just cut out of the meal.
Everything is better with Cheese
A trick I learned when my Mom did it with me, is to pour a little melted cheese over broccoli. It works wonders to help your kids eat those veggies.
Put a little Fruit in it
When you make your kids cereal or oatmeal for breakfast, sneak some pieces of fruit in there like strawberries or bananas. It adds a little sugar to an otherwise bland breakfast.
Whole Grain Pasta
It has been my experience that when smothered in cheese, marinara sauce or spaghetti sauce, kids (and husbands!) won’t notice the pasta beneath is actually whole grain. You just made your meal twice as healthy as when you started.
If they can’t see it, they probably don’t know it’s there! Next time you make your kids macaroni and cheese, sneak some pieces of cauliflower into it and mix it up. Cauliflower is the same color as noodles, so when covered in cheese they won’t even notice it.
Put a little Whip on Top
Instead of Ice Cream, serve your family a bowl of fruit or sugar-free jell-o with light whipped cream on top. It adds just enough fun and sweetness to make it feel like dessert.
Get them involved
Kids love to help you cook and bake. Get them involved in the kitchen, show them the things that can be healthy but still taste delicious. They will have fun and will surely eat their meal if they helped prepare it.
Another trick to getting your kids to eat their fruits and veggies. Make a delicious, low-fat smoothie with frozen fruit, almond milk, yogurt and a dash of leafy greens. Healthy and yummy!
Whole Grain White Bread
It looks like white bread, it tastes like white bread, but it is actually whole grain. It’s not as healthy as whole wheat bread but if your kids refuse to eat wheat bread, this is the next best thing!
