When people think of divination they see palm readers and crystal balls. They assume that mastering divination will allow them to win the lottery at will and anticipate their boss’ every move. This is incorrect. The same problems that exist in time travel exist in divination. Essentially this means one thing. The future is not set. “But Naty!” you might say, “What about destiny, what about soul mates and true love! Isn’t there a grand design to all this madness?” Why yes, there may very well be. However very few events are actually set in stone.
Some events that are “meant to be” may have a number of possible times and circumstances in which to happen. Most events have no guarantee to happen at all. Occasionally you will run into something that is specifically destined to happen at a set time and a set day and under set circumstances, but this is highly rare. For the most part your future changes depending on many, many factors, some of which are outside your immediate control.
So with all this confusion how is it possible to divine anything in our future? Most divination techniques work to divine what will happen if nothing changes. They tell you what your future looks like so far. Some are designed to predict events that absolutely will happen in your life unless you take active measures to change the situation. Some target only those rare events that are absolute. The later being the least likely to succeed. Here’s a run down of some basic forms of divination and how to use them.
A very popular technique, these cards contain universal ideas, icons, and themes that may apply to life. They can be read many different ways, and different decks have different undertones. To be sure you are reading them correctly, the most important thing is to know your deck well. A tarot deck works by absorbing the energy of the person who shuffles them. Asking the deck a question while shuffling can be very helpful in getting the answers you seek.
Crystal Balls and Scrying
Essentially scrying is the process of looking into an enchanted surface and interpreting what you see. This is an advanced technique and uses the mind’s eye to see things that are not concrete, but symbolic. If you ever looked at the clouds and saw animals, you are familiar with the basic technique used in scrying. The easiest surfaces to use are those that move and form shapes on their own. The best people to scry are children. Children’s eyes are not blocked by reality and rules. If you are having trouble seeing what you need ask a kid what they see.
Advanced diviners use crystals and other hard surfaces to scry. How can you see abstract symbols in a solid surface? The light has something to do with it, but the more important technique is going into a meditative trance. This will adjust you to be able to see things on other planes. The crystal is essentially an enchanted focal sight to help you direct a deep meditation. I don’t recommend trying crystal balls unless you have quite a bit of experience in divination and meditation.
Scrying with Nature
This technique frequently uses fruits or leaves to see into the future, or into the past for that matter. This technique centers on scrying with shapes and colors that occur naturally. Ever play the game with the apple, in which you twist the stem while reciting the alphabet to divine your future mate’s name? This is nature scrying. Reading tealeaves is also nature scrying.
Using a Ouija Board
If you are planning to use a Ouija board to scry for the past of future do yourself a favor and don’t. These things are against the “rules”. Asking questions about your past or future through the board will put you at risk. Spirits only follow the rules if you do.
