Clear plastic bubble umbrellas that curve down over the shoulders are so much better on a rainy day than the usual floating flat one held high. The clear plastic is like a curved window which allows you to get a good view of the watery world around you without getting wet. My favorite umbrella was a clear plastic bubble with navy and tan edging. It was great for carrying purse, binders, and paperwork into work without any of it getting wet. Unfortunately, I lost it, or one of those people who admired it so often found it, so for a long time I made do with the usual ones which were just not doing the job.
What is a bubble umbrella?
The bubble umbrella creates a clear bubble of plastic to keep you dry without obscuring your vision. The bubble is really a half bubble, covering head and shoulders. As it is made of clear plastic or vinyl, the person under the umbrella can actually see out, watching where they are going, and keeping an eye out for puddles and obstacles.
Some of these clear plastic bubble umbrellas are available with lots of decoration on them, but that defeats the purpose of a clear rain barrier. One of the best things about this umbrella is to be able to see out and watch where you are going, so all that decoration and those colored designs just get in the way. An edging around the bottom is a nice touch, but it is best to leave the bubble part clear.
What are the advantages of a bubble umbrella?
There are several advantages to this umbrella, with the most important being keeping you dry. However, there are other advantages. The ability to see where you are going is a revelation to someone who hasn’t used one. You walk along the sidewalk without bumping into people because you can actually see where you are going. You can see those puddles before your shoes hit the water and get squishy. You won’t poke anyone’s eye out, or scratch them with the end of your umbrella spokes, because the shape of the bubble umbrella points the ends of the spokes downwards out of the way. The umbrella keeps your purse, notebook, bags, and other things you are carrying dry.
Most bubble umbrellas come with a curved handle which makes it easier to hang on to while using it. The handle also makes it possible to hook it over your arm as you walk, or over your chair in a restaurant or coffee shop, or to hang over the shower head or other place in your house or apartment where you put umbrellas to drip dry.
What are the disadvantages of a bubble umbrella?
The bubble umbrella will not fold up, so it won’t fit in your purse or bag when it is not raining. It is a one person umbrella, but then I’ve never had good luck sharing an umbrella anyway, as I always end up getting wet. The one I have is not auto opening, so it doesn’t open with one hand at the push of a button. As it is vinyl, it will not dry easily and will get sticky if closed wet.
Where are bubble umbrellas for sale?
These umbrellas just the perfect thing for kids, so many of the ones for sale in the stores are kid sized. There are some stores which sell these clear plastic umbrellas, but they can be hard to find. When I went online to find a source, I found that clear plastic bubble umbrellas are easily available, so I now have two of them. The umbrellas open manually, and are 35 inches in diameter.
Mine came from Frankford Umbrellas in New Jersey. Service was quick, efficient, and their umbrella has lasted for several years. They describe it as a study vinyl canopy with reinforced steel ribs, adding, “I can see clearly now the rain is here! When the forecast calls for rain, just smile. Your new bubble umbrella will offer all of the protection you need.” I bought myself two of them to be sure I always have one handy.
