Early one morning I sat listening to a cardinal singing. I knew it was a male, calling to attract it’s mate. Over and over it sang out the same melody. What a beautiful song! Yet, it sounded sad and lonely, at the same time. I watched and waited.
I knew that he was somewhere in the top of the tree, hidden in the foliage. It’s funny how such a brilliantly colored bird, can remain unseen. The red plumage is an attraction only to it’s own species. They spend most of their time, hidden in the tops of the highest trees. Still, you would think that it would stand out, being so different from it’s surroundings. Aside from it’s song, it would remain there, unnoticed by all except those willing to answer it’s call.
Then, down he came and landed on our feeder. Just moments before a rather ugly black bird had been feeding there. But, at the Cardinal’s approach, it flew. Just as suddenly, a female Cardinal, drab in comparison to her counterpart, swooped down to join the male. Together they fed on the seed. Then, together they flew back to the security of the tree heights.
What a wonderful picture of God! The Creator so often reveals glimpses of Himself, through His creation. This allows our finite minds to better contend with understanding the incomprehensible, infinite nature of God.
God calls out to us; seeking to draw us to Him. Jesus even equated our relationship with Him; to that of His being the Bridegroom, making us, the Church, His Bride. Out of love, He asks us to join Him. Over and over, He sends out this message, waiting for us to respond. His is a joyous message of salvation, tinged with the sadness of our hesitation. Yet, He waits patiently for us to enter into the relationship for which we were created.
Our hesitation is often the result of hearing, yet not seeing God, who reigns far above our comprehension. God is so incredibly different, set apart, Holy, that He stands in stark contrast to all which He created. Yet, He remains hidden from our sight by sin. His call to join Him, is a call requiring us to have faith in the unseen.
Still the hesitation remains. That is why Jesus came to earth; Emmanuel, “God with us”. God walked with man in the Person of Jesus. He ate, worked, laughed and cried with us. He announced that those who had seen Him and His sinless example, had seen the Father. No longer was God unreachable. He had shown Himself and the Way to redemption, through Jesus. Jesus; He died for our atonement. Then He rose again! The blood of the risen Christ, beckons to all who would be cleansed from their sin. The red blood, shed for us, washes white as snow those who will answer His call.
Someday, this same Jesus is coming again. This time He will take those who love Him along and we will reign with Him on High.
