The media has spun the issue of the suicide, cyber bullying, and the Pentagons policy on homosexuality. The situation is not a new incident in our societies history or any history at all. Today new monikers must be given unfortunately to an age-old problem. Dehumanization defined as a loss at the grasp of basic human standards. An abuse that has been tolerated for so long that news media must spin a new name to grasp our attention. The best way to sum it up, we degrade people under these groupings: Physical, Social, Mental and Spiritual (yes mind, body and soul it’s all up for grabs).
This lists goes on there is no end nor degree to the fact that one human being will take the act of stripping another human beings self worth to the extreme. These abuses are either a physical extreme or served to the individual in small acts of abuse over long periods of time psychological without reprieve. Imagine everyday of your life receiving hostility by just being you, witnessed by others, and reported without any resolve. The witnesses do nothing to halt the attacks or join into the abuse. The incident that is reported seldom is remedied as the usually course of action is acknowledge there is problem and turn a blind eye to it with some new policy or late apology. I’m sorry to put this bluntly, this is failure of basic human rights do we really need to continue expanding the definition upon individual means of applications to human abuses?
The fact that technology and any instrument can be used without restraint reveals the issue of defining abuse is not clearly registering. Considering some key history of the source of our technology. Alan Mathison Turing a British; mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, world war II hero and computer scientist played a major role in the creation of the modern computer. His homosexuality resulted in a criminal prosecution in 1952 for gross indecency, which was illegal in the United Kingdom then. In his prosecution he was given a choice of prison or chemical castration in hopes to continue his work the choice castration but the cocktail of hormones eventually degraded him physically and mentally. The prosecution lost his security clearance therefore barred from government mathematical programs. Turing died of suicide cyanide poisoning. During World War II, he created the bombe machine that deciphered the German enigma code later he developed the Turing machine and Turing test which is the basis of computing intelligence testing. A man that developed the ground works of modern intelligent computing lost we could not compute intelligent basic standards of human and civil rights over a half century ago. Where do we stand today?
The true pursuit of a meaningful and a fulfilling relationship is it not ones desire to seek a soul mate a reasonable pursuit. The concept of a soul mate is the purest strive for love and the understanding the body but a shell or robe for the human soul. If religion dictates non-tolerance and orientation is based on gender designation. I dare you answer these questions: If a person is defined by gender designation to it’s purpose why are some children are born Hermaphrodites? Does a soul truly have a gender designation? I ask these questions because as a child of a bi-racial union I’ve seen the stigma presented no differently in the intolerance whether bi-racial and interfaith unions all argued against under religion, ridiculous excuses and social debates. Knowing the history of homosexuality through the course of human history the lynching, burning at the stake during religious reformations, and other injustices. Yes, very similar to the treatment of Jews in Europe and African Americans during the 1960’s Jim Crow south. Yet knowing the horrific historical issue gays and others still brave to face a struggle to find value, meaning, purpose, security and happiness through a relationship of mutual consent.
The other fact that bullying viewed as an acceptable part of life. Really? There is a standard for bullying that is acceptable? The concept that kids will be kids as a means for exploring and assert ones boundaries, that’s fine if there wasn’t a failure to enforce these boundaries. This is not assertiveness to truly define bullying on a large scale many nations have acknowledge some countries that are ruled by corrupt dictators that enforce hostility, fear and intimidation upon their people. This has resulted in wide spread acts of violence such as wars and casualties. The crimes of brutality have in some parts of the world under oppressive regimes included mass rapes and human genocide. Something the world doesn’t tolerate. Well bullying is an act that enforces hostility, fear and intimidation that has led to personal violence/retaliation and death. This anti-social behavior a leading contributor to crimes includes: sexual assault, domestic violence and murder. Do you see the parallels? The choice to bully is an act to single a person out and isolate them it’s okay cause this is just kid stuff right or is it? Think of these actions: isolating Jews to ghettos, and segregation under Jim Crow laws. I find it ironic we condemn the large acts but not the small ones that are similar in nature.
A no bully policy has existed when I began school over 32 years ago, so why do kids get beaten to the point of hospitalization and why do kids feel they have to bring guns to school for self-protection? Today some schools have metal detectors instead of new books and uniformed police officers walking among students instead of hiring better educators. We have lost the middle ground to understand what assertiveness is an act of conviction to declare positive authority of human right and exclaim of vested privilege. Assertiveness is an entitled right of authority, an earned and respected trust enforcing positive action on all individuals and society. Which must be maintained and practiced with great care not to enforce shallow acts of superiority. A middle ground has been lost cause the effort is by choice and the concept to have humanity police may seem obscure and obscene. There just is a failure to adhere to basic human standards it must be too difficult and beyond our understanding or just cost too much money. Sadly, we might need a cop to tell us to act like human beings such as ones issuing tickets for traffic violations cause we pose a hazard to others on the road. As impossible as it sounds, do we need humanity checkpoints?
Political arguments are made to further; another law, another policy and another rights organizations are created yet again. I see these actions; as imagine being on the tracks, in the middle of a trestle bridge, over a deep gorge and a train is coming. That train carries boxcars each with a human atrocity to the life behind you home and family. You are too far out on the bridge to run out the path, not strong enough to derail it and you have no choice but to let it run you over. The reason no one showed up to help but proclaim just remove one boxcar that applies to me. We can’t see each other cause we are all blinded by our one cause our one issue that applies to us as individuals and can’t see in investing in the whole chain reaction. All each can do is slow it through our new policies or laws.
While all along the remedy is simple you view each individual as ‘˜Human Beings’ first and foremost. If we had just seen each other in the same light we could stop the train! The response to this simple application is usually fostered with derogative response that this is the way of the world is and life is just unfair. The idea doesn’t sink into our social thinking despite a history of civil lawsuits, freedom marches, existence of abuse shelters and survival or support groups. We find the world we live in today cause we validate it and we don’t live a fair life cause we allow it. The United Kingdom sacrificed Alan Turing, if the out come different Silicon Valley could have resided along the Thames. Based on this possibility, what potential is lost in suppressing people from excelling and what is the consequence to society? Did we lose the in deterring our wars in Iraq or Afghanistan? When we destroy another’s humanity do we kill off our opportunity to end our suffering from the problems of today’s economy?
All I can do is tell you my experience the third grade I had a bully it was on both a physical, sexual and psychological nature. It was on school grounds, reported and dropped. The reason made by schools administrators on the bully’s defense: boys will be boys, he’s a minority, his parents are divorced, you can’t label him as bad and his family lack financial resources. So, I continue school with the knowledge: quality of my education insignificant, girls valueless, mix breed half a thought, good parental relations horrid, middle class status unbelievable and if bad happens don’t hold your breath. You learn to survive by holding to one creed: “Expect nothing but the worst from everyone and everything but from yourself the best.” Well fast forward few years later I saw his picture in the local newspaper I recognized his face before reading to confirm his name. He still looked like he did at age ten. My bully arrested for the murder of his mother’s landlord and facing serious prison time. He had prior convictions on assault, battery, theft, and property damage. The landlord issued a restraint order toward my bully prior to his murder.
If you think I feel relief he’s put away your wrong. A terrible chain reaction happened from kid stuff I hate that I witnessed first hand. Now multiple lives destroyed the victim’s family, the bully’s family, add the expense of his incarceration felt by our community and remember my creed I’m seldom disappointed by it today. Life does get better cause I’ve gotten much better I recognize to stop the minor issue before a greater one happens. I can never see a hero when I get involved just a person still saving my self I still feel every attack as mine. Trust me so do others who own a light in humanity, we never see the heroes only the assault. To quote the Dali Lama, “Just as you have the instinctive natural desire to be happy and overcome suffering, so do all sentient beings; just as you have the right to fulfill this innate aspiration, so do all sentient beings. So on what grounds do you discriminate?”
