I get up every morning thinking about how hard my husband works. It has it’s good points and it’s bad. It has it’s dangers, and joys.
I know the dangers my husband goes through. He goes miles underground in a dark and dirty hole in the ground. The only light he has is on his head, and he depends on each of the men he works with to have his back as they depend on him as well. The good points are the money is rewarding, but it’s not all about money. These hard working men, work everyday to provide electricity for America. And with the controversy of some wanting to shut down the mines and send them overseas, our men worry even more now.
It isn’t enough that they worry about methane gas building up, the dust they work in causing problems breathing, a roof that could fall in, or the dangerous equipment they work with, they now have to worry about if they’re going to lose the only job they’ve known for ten and fifteen years. If they lost these jobs what would happen? There would be hundreds if not thousands of coal miner’s out of work, no longer able to provide for their families.
But almost every coal miner I know talks about how happy they are when the end of month comes and they are told they run enough coal. It means a bonus. For some a couple hundred, for others a few more than that. But none the less, they go home to their families and feel that pride when they walk in the door and know their family is taken care of because of what they do.
Not every person can do what these men do, and not every person has the desire to do it all, but for those that do, they work hard. They go in whatever shift their assigned to, some may work on belts, some on shuttle cars, or the roof bolting machine, some the miner. Which ever job they have, each is important to the mines. The miner man, uses a remote to control the blades of the miner to cut into the seem of coal. The shuttle car driver take the coal coming from the miner to the feeder, which takes it down the belt and to the outside. the men that work the belt lines, keep the belt running and the coal that falls off put back on the belt. The men that run the bolt machine, goes in and puts bolts and plates in the top of the mines to help support it and keep it from falling. Each job is equally important.
There is also the repair men. These men go underground to repair anything that could go wrong with the equipment. They have had training and get certified to do this.
There are many other tasks coal miner’s have to do, and without even one of them things could mess up and go wrong.
Some people may think that coal miner’s are uneducated people that couldn’t get another job. They are wrong. These men chose this job because the pay is better than anything else they could have done except being a doctor and lawyer. But those aren’t as adventurous as this job. These men have to have training, they have to be able to understand their training to be able to even get this job. One thing going wrong can risk someone Else’s life. So it’s safe to safe, these men are smart. they know what they are doing. But tell me, could you do this?
