Your dream could be starting a business, looking for a new career, writing a book, becoming a consultant, turning your hobby into a money making venture, reinventing yourself after retirement… the list is endless. But, whatever your dream, you have a responsibility to yourself to make it happen.
With most people who have dreams and goals, the problem isn’t knowing what they are but figuring out how to get there. You need to have a plan and strategy; otherwise you can’t even get started.
Here Are Some Guidelines for Turning Your Dreams into a Reality:
Make Sure Your Goal Makes Sense
Is it really what you want, or just a reaction to a previous problem? Think about why you want it. For instance, do you want your own business because you no longer want to work for someone else or are you really passionate about owning that restaurant or gift shop?
Clarify Your Vision
Write it down. Articulating your goals will make them real. If you can’t write your idea or goals down, then you haven’t completely formulated them in your mind. If your goal isn’t well thought out, it will feel inactionable and overwhelming.
Research and Preparation
Information gathering is critical to reaching your goal. Whether it’s information about an industry, or competitive-market analysis, you need to know the facts. For example, you may have a great idea for a book, but you may go to Barnes & Noble and find 25 books on the same subject. Is there a demand or need for what you want to do? Can you make yours different or better?
Set Steps that are Realistic
If you want to launch a business or make a dramatic career shift, know that it takes significant time, preparation and involvement. If you’re currently working in a demanding full time job, don’t expect to reach your goal in the next few months. Be willing to invest the time and patience to do it properly.
Recognize Your Talents and Your Barriers
If you want to be a freelance writer, medical researcher, own a cafe, develop a business website or start a franchise, do you have the skills to market yourself, to acquire and work with clients? Make sure every aspect of your goal is a natural outgrowth of who you are – your talents, passions and abilities.
