Homeopathy actually has a history that goes back a couple of centuries. What is homeopathy? It’s an alternative medical treatment system that uses diluted substances from plants, minerals and animals as a means of addressing the problems associated with illness and disease. You can actually trace homeopathy back to a single founder: Dr. Samuel Hahneman. This German doctor was out to prove that ancient rites like bloodletting and leech attachment didn’t have to be the be-all and end-all of medical treatment.
Flash-forward 200 years and what do the practitioners of homeopathy claim can be treated with this alternative medical system? In other words: what can homeopathy treat in a way that is at least as effective as a placebo? Well, don’t go thinking you can cure cancer with homeopathy, regardless of the claims made. However, there are some lesser problems that homeopathy seems capable of treating to a degree that is at least on a part with Big Pharma in America.
Oscillococcinum. Difficult word to pronounce so let’s just refer to it as the homeopathic agent used to treat influenza. Or, better yet, let’s call an oscillococcinum what is really is: duck heart and kidney, minus the British pie. Treatment of the flu with duck heart and kidney produced a 1989 British study that claims that nearly 20% of those who were treated homeopathically in this way recovered after just two days compared to just 10% of respondents who recovered by using a placebo. Does oscillococcinum really help you get over the flu? Only those with gout may know for sure, but considering the way Big Pharma has attached and not beaten case after case of influenza, it probably would not hurt.
Can homeopathy actually do anything about rheumatoid arthritis? Some medical studies made up mostly of anecdotal evidence have forwarded the proposition that homeopathy is an alternative medical treatment that results in the relief of the pain and stiffness associated with rheumatoid arthritis. There is also some suggestion that you can equip yourself with a stronger grip through homeopathic techniques.
The homeopathic agent of choice for treating sprained muscles is Traumeel. Marathon runners who have tried Traumeel have reported a significant reduction in the pain associated with running 26 miles. Then again, are you really going to take the word of someone who just run for 26 miles because he wanted to?
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
The actual fatigue part of CFS is said to respond to homeopathic treatment quite positively. What is even better news is that some of the other symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also respond to homeopathic treatment such as drowsiness, heavy limbs and lids and even moodiness. Considering that Big Pharma has thus far to produce a pill they can get doctors to push onto patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, there is good reason to put some trust in this alternative medical treatment for what is an increasing problem as the Baby Boomers settle into old age.
