If you are planning to visit Tampa Bay or just relocated to the area or have family or friends coming to visit a great place to take in some culture would be to one of the fine art museums. Each museum showcases unique collections whether from a single artist or masterworks from Europe, North America and Asia or contemporary art mixed in with Greek and Roman antiquities. All the museums are on waterfronts with two locations in downtown. Here is your very own guide to the top three art museums in Tampa Bay you should go visit.
1.) The Dali Museum – St. Petersburg, Florida
This museum was the result of a vast collection acquired of the Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali’s art work. These private collectors had amassed the largest amount of his art worldwide. They were in need of a place to showcase his work. In 1982 the Dali Museum opened to the public. It also features other artists with similar visions to Dali. Shortly after the New Year there will be a New Dali Grand Opening. The museum is located in downtown St. Petersburg.
2.) The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art – Sarasota, Florida
By far this is the most impressive location for an art museum and other cultural facilities, plus the famous mansion, Ca’d’Zan. Located on Sarasota Bay the Museum of Art houses the personal collection of John Ringling’s that feature masterpieces of paintings and sculptures by Rubens, van Dyck, El Greco, Tintoretto and many more. The museum opened in 1931. In the Courtyard of the Museum of Art there are casts of original antiquities and Renaissance sculptures including the famous David by Michelangelo. You can spend the day on the grounds of this magnificent estate.
3.) Tampa Museum of Art – Tampa, Florida
Here is another museum located in downtown Tampa along with Hillsborough River. It features an eclectic array of collections ranging from Roman and Greek Antiquities to contemporary paintings, photography, sculptures and works on paper. Even though there are antiquities the Tampa Museum of Art is more of a contemporary art museum for those who appreciate that type of work.
Whatever your tastes are in art appreciation there is a museum for you to visit in Tampa Bay. If you enjoy the surreal art of Dali to the classic masterworks from Europe to contemporary art in various forms it’s all there for you to take in.
