There is a new phenomenon on YouTube. If you are a fan of Glee and Harry Potter, you might recognize the main star of A Very Potter Musical, Darren Criss. Criss, who is a graduate from University of Michigan, Bachelor ‘s in Fine Arts program, will star as Blaine, Kurt’s new gay boyfriend, making an appearance as early as November 8th on Glee. He will sing “Teenage Dream.” The San Francisco native’s new success is probably a result of his You Tube performance in a Harry Potter parody with over two million views.
Starkid, the company that produced the show along with Basement Arts, created it as an unofficial fan-made tribute to Harry Potter. In a recent interview on YouTube by Phoenix writers, Nick Lang related that his brother, Matt, one of the writers and directors of the show, is a big fan of Rowling’s book series. He found the idea for a song in the subtext of the series– Draco must be in love with Hermione Granger. “No one can be that mean,” said Nick Lang. The jokes for the parody took years of creation, but the production itself around two weeks.
The story starts with a 12-year-old Harry Potter getting ready to get back to Hogwarts because everyone there knows he is “cool.” It opens with the snappy musical number,”‘Goin’ Back to Hogwarts.” Harry meets up with his friends, Ron (Joey Richter) and Hermione (Bonnie Gruesen) for a legendary year only for it to be spoiled by the return of the most evil dark lord of all, Voldemort, played by Joe Walker. The musical consisted of memorable performances from Lauren Lopez playing the role of the conniving Draco. She manages to make Draco physically comical by slithering on stage. The play is not G-rated by all means. It has instances of sexual references and cursing in good jest. The musical has a quick comedic timing and reminds us of Broadway plays like Monty Python’s Spamalot, a musical based on the classic film comedy, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Darren Criss and A.J. Holmes wrote the music and lyrics for the creation. Matt and Nick Lang along with Brian Holden wrote the book for the musical. The musical showed from April 9-11 at the Walgreen Drama Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan but can be seen anytime on YouTube.
