I moved into a little house on the border of the Richfield-New London town line in Stanly County, NC a few years ago. It had been vacant for several years before I rented it. I never knew why it stayed empty so long. For about the first four or five months the place was quiet and very ideal for me and my two children. But, around our first Christmas there things started to happen.
My daughter who was seven at the time stayed in the bedroom on the other end of the house. It started with her waking in the middle of the night with what I thought were nightmares. But, the consistency in the story she would always tell me and the number of times she was waking up screaming was happening at an alarming rate. The story was that a scary man was in her room bothering her while she was trying to sleep. After a month of her waking up every night I decided to stay up and wait. What I saw was unbelievable.
I left only the hall light on and sat on the couch facing the hall that led to her room. It was about 12:30 am, just a short time before she would normally wake up crying. I thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me at first. A tall black shadow bounce off the hall walls from the kitchen down to her room and disappeared. It wasn’t 15 minutes later the she was screaming. I couldn’t believe it! I stayed up the next three nights and the same thing happened every night. After that I let her share her brother’s room. She didn’t have any more nightmares after that. Even though she was no longer in the bedroom the shadow came back almost every night. I knew it wasn’t a trick of my eyes because I had other friends witness the same thing.
The shadow in the hallway was just the beginning of it. I came home from the grocery store about three months after moving my daughter out of her room to find a tall black mass standing in the tree line by the back door of the house. I started towards it and it vanished into the trees. By this point all kinds of things were happening in the house and numerous people witnessed them. Shadow figures were seen in the hall all through the night now. We even tested to see if we could reproduce the same effect but couldn’t. They were so predictable that I named the shadows “George”. Noises started to be heard in every room around the same time. It sounded like a ball bouncing down the hall, a book falling off a shelf, a loud knock on the wall, a child running through the house and then the voices came.
I’m not sure how many times early on I heard the voices because I had children in the house and thought it was the kids playing or up past their bedtime. It was when the kids were gone for the weekends that I knew for sure it was not them. You would hear what sounded like a small child giggling from the kitchen and then the sound of footsteps running back down the hall. Sometimes you would hear “yay” and the bouncing sound. The one time that I will NEVER forget is when I was all alone in the house typing a paper. No music or TV was on. Everything was all quiet but the sound of me typing. I noticed that the bouncing sound was coming from the hall with the sound of footsteps. By this point I was used to it and didn’t pay much attention to it. I guess I made whatever it was upset because all of a sudden I heard a very loud “MOMMY!” from right behind me. I swooped around and didn’t see anything. Every hair on my body stood straight up. I ran outside to see if by chance the neighbor’s kids were outside playing but there was no one, not even a passing car.
Soon after that I moved out. The activity was getting so consistent that anyone who came over experienced something every time. I was worried that things might escalate and I wasn’t going to take that chance. It has been a year since I moved and the house is still empty. The owner never lived in it. He bought it as a rental investment. I’m starting to think that the house chooses the tenants, not the other way around.
