One family member’s account of the incident as it unfolded:
My family members met a couple in the local trading journal that did trades for various items. They rapidly became friends. As they associated themselves with the 2, the stalker fell in love with my sister and supposedly, put his live-in girlfriend out. They didn’t realize he was fantasying over her very badly. He was hoping he would be able to spit up their marriage and she would come to him willingly. He would work his wiles on them both as he goes along. He is threatening his live-in and tells her if she helps them he will kill her, too.
After the girlfriend was thrown out she befriended my sister. Funny thing is, he still was friends with the live-in.
It wasn’t long before she moved in with her. He had sold my sister a mobile home to move into to take care of my Mother that had a terminal illness. She began to see the stalker for spite to her husband, thinking she would just get him back. She still did not realize he would force himself on her and then demand she let go of her husband and be with him. My ex husband became very concerned for his brother, therefore, he began keeping close company with them.
Her husband was employed at a local college as maintenance there. He got acquainted with a foreign girl. He began to see her behind my sister’s back. Of course, the stalker loved this chance. He offered his home for him to bring this girl to. He had been seeing her for months there. He would take her to his Mom’s to visit and his Mom was well aware of this, but did not realize how this scenario was going to play out. This went on secretly for 3 months. My sister found out all this information and she threw him out of the house. He kept seeing this girl. He was trying to get his wife to take him back by pleading with her and making promises of not having anymore to do with her. She finally too him back.
The stalker was a man of temperament. He could not live with the fact that he had lost this battle. It was almost like he was looking at this with more winning than getting her back. He had stalked them for a long time. He appeared at my sisters mobile home, in the park, with a gun in his pocket trying to smooth things over with her. He kept his hands in his pocket during the visit. My sister was very shaken by this. After he left she went to the magistrates office and got a restraining order against him. State Police came to pick him up after another incident of stalking. He gave them a pitiful story. He made the officer think it was the others that were causing him problems and the police left without taking him in.
My sister would call me and be very terrified. I wanted her to come and live with me. I was not taking this as serious as it needed to be. After all, we would always hear of people being threatened this way, but nothing ever came from it. She was so disturbed she was afraid we would all be murdered.
She was already in the care of a psychiatrist so her doctor placed her in the hospital under close supervision. There was only one phone in the hallway in that small section of the hospital. He had somehow gotten that number, but how? She could not figure this out. She became suspicious of her, so called, friend that had moved in with her. He had continued to communicate with her and was informing her if she helped in any way, he was going to get her too. The stalker had talked to my ex husband and had warned him if he did not leave them alone he would be kill him, too. Keep in mind, the mobile homes were very close together. It was a small one with a pet shop below the park where the owner of the park lived behind it. Probably only around 6 on each side of the park.
He began to describe to them how he would accomplish the killing. He would first kill the 2 dogs he had tied at the back of his dwelling then come for them. They still kept coming to church and hoping they could get him to come and come to Christ himself. This was only a dream.
He caught his chance. They were all gone one evening when he loaded his gun and waited patiently for them to back into their driveway. They knew he had already killed these 2 animals. They were very fearful, but nothing else could be done.
We all were at church that evening, but they had failed to attend. We got worried, but we figured they were out checking on the girl’s Mom. After the church service was over we all went home. In a few minutes, her daughter came to my door. She wanted to know if I had seen her Mom. I just told her that they was not at church and I figured they had gone to check on that lady. She said my sister’s trailer was on fire and she was trying to find them. She was afraid he had killed them and set the trailer on fire with them in it. I tried to calm her. She left quickly, after she she realized they were not with us.
I was still in denial. I figured they were just somewhere riding around or checking on that lady. I got dressed and rode up to check on them myself. It was almost dark. Just enough light to see my nephew standing at the foot of the road stopping traffic. He said there were 3 bodies found upon that hill and nobody was allowed to go up there. I was deeply terrified at this point and so confused in my head that we had lost them now. I tried to make my way to a parking place and I remember going in to a residence that was close to the end of the park. I was needing to go up there and check on them. No one would allow me that. There was already crime tape in place, the fire department, and sheriff that we all was close fiends to had all arrived at the scene. My oldest son had arrived and we were just going crazy. The residence of the house were trying to tell us we could not stay there we had to get out. At this point, the man had terrified the complete mobile home park. They were afraid he would kill them, too. They had to protect themselves.
Our Pastor arrived and was describing why we were there. He got everyone calmed down. Then my youngest son appeared and was going wild. He wanted to go upon the hill. He broke through the crime tape and went. The fire department flared their lights on him so bad he could not see who was on the ground so he came off the hill. They later informed us he had almost stepped on his Dad. Our Pastor took all of us to the ER because my son needed help badly. When we arrived, we heard the killer was back in the ER and my son was trying to get to him. A friend told us the killer was there because he was pretending to be mentally ill to get out of what he had done. The doctor informed the nurse to release him because there was nothing wrong with him. He had to be incarcerated for a long time before the trial was scheduled to be.
In the courtroom, they set up videos to allow the jury to see how bad this scene was. I only allowed myself to see one photo .I didn’t want these images of their deaths to remain in my mind forever.
They had backed in the driveway and was waiting on my sister to hunt her keys to open the door. She could not find her keys. They had taken her friend to her Mom’s and had left her there. He came around the front end of the mobile home quickly and put a hole in the side of the windshield where my sister was sitting. It had hit her in the stomach.
Her husband was shot next. He got out of the car and was pleading for his life when he was hit again. This time in his face and head. My ex husband tried to run and had got to the back of the lot, trying to jump over the fence and run behind the park when a bullet caught him at his lower back and traveled up to his heart and killed him.
The shooter received 3 life sentences and one arson charge. The prosecuting attorney asked to bring out previous records of the defendant, but the judge would not allow it. He was placed in the Mount Olive Correctional Facility to serve the rest of his life behind bars just because he was determined to have his way in life.
