Halloween is close, the air is crisp and as you walk through the woods your feet push through the fallen oak and maple leaves that cover the trail. In the distance, a barred owl calls and the smell of wood smoke drifts through the air. The scene is set for Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary’s Halloween Prowl.
A Halloween Show for All Ages
The Halloween Prowl is an outdoor walk through forest and field that goes along natural trails. The guided group tours begin in the evening, either just before or just after sunset (depending on the day). A tour guide leads groups along an illuminated trail decorated with hand-cut luminaries. Individuals should be prepared to walk over uneven ground and up a slight hill as they are guided to different stations.
At these stations the group stops to watch presentations by costume characters who discuss the natural history of plants and animals in Massachusetts. Other individuals in this Halloween show discuss the history of Halloween as well as how it is observed by modern-day Wiccans. A jack o’lantern display, carved by child and adult volunteers the Thursday before the event, glows inside a barn.
A Safe, Non-Scary Halloween Festival
Participants then end the hour-long walk at Moose Hill’s Nature Center where they can get a warm drink and treats and sit around a campfire. Participants are encouraged to come in costume to add to the festivities.
The Halloween Prowl is open to families, scout groups, and other community groups. Although this is a non-scary event, the opportunity to walk through the woods at night is a rare one for many people and adds to the mystery and magic of the program.
Presentations and Classes at the Massachusetts Audubon Society
Moose Hill is a 2000-acre wildlife sanctuary in the community of Sharon, Massachusetts, which is between Boston, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island. Moose Hill is the oldest sanctuary owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
Open year-round to hikers, Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary also offers school field trips and in-class presentations as well as on-site classes and camps for children ages three and up. Adult programs are also offered.
To register for the Halloween Prowl, call Moose Hill at 781-784-5691. Tours leave throughout the evening every fifteen minutes and tickets must be purchased before the event. Once purchased, tickets cannot be exchanged to other times or days.
The program runs rain or shine and is only cancelled with a weather advisory. The event runs the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the week before Halloween; because the dates change year-to-year, call to confirm. In 2010, tickets cost $9; this event is a fundraiser for the wildlife sanctuary.
