Adorable little babies and chubby cheeks that grandmothers all over seem to like to squeeze. Those cute chubby knees that toddle their way across a room to a parents waiting arms. All that adorable and cute chubby baby fat may not be so cute and adorable as the child grows up and can lead to health issues. There has been overwhelming concern in America today about obesity and the effects on America’s youth. So much now so that some parents are even turning to personal trainers to help with their children’s weight issues.
Estimates are currently showing that there are 22 million children who are overweight worldwide and that number is for children aged five and under. The United States Surgeon General states that the number of children who are overweight in the United States has doubled within the last twenty years.
Due to the current obesity problem that parents are now facing, a lot have now turned to personal trainers for help. Not only does this help keep the child active but also gives them one on one help to get their weight regulated and get into good physical shape. Parents are paying amounts of up to $75.00 an hour for their child to have a personal trainer. There are even children at age three who are having trainers.
One father had decided to get his son help. His son who is 5’3″, weighs 160 pounds is only ten years old. According to body mass index this would make the son 28.4 in body mass, and above 95th percentile for overweight. His dad does willing admit that this is not healthy for his son.
By reducing the weight and maintaining the proper weight will greatly reduce health issues in the future such as diabetes and heart disease.
New York personal trainer Mike Shaw states that childrens’ bones are just not fully developed to handle the extra weight.
Health care practitioners however, are reminding parents that children need to be careful about exercise routine. Exercises such as pushups, sit ups and jumping jacks are appropriate.
To understand this trend in obesity we need to acknowledge the factors that contribute to the problem.
In today’s society families are busier than ever from work to school to club activities and meetings. So families are cooking less meals at home and opting out to just simply eat out. Eating out does contribute to obesity by food portions. The portions you receive in restaurants are more than you would have at home. Let’s face it those all you can eat buffets do encourage persons to eat more than what they actually should during a meal. If the restaurant is not the choice then you can always count on mom or dad going through the drive through for dinner. Drive through foods are high calorie foods that you’re bringing home have the family ingest. Junk food is not healthy we all of heard this time and time again. Yet it is as if those junk food bags just mesmerize the person into buying them. It seems as if there is always a store having that potato chip, Little Debbie or Doritos special. If you tell your child it’s a nice day outside why don’t you go out and play, they look at you like your just plain crazy. Television shows, X box games and computers seem to rule the lives of children. A lot of schools now a day are eliminating or cutting down on physical education classes, leaving the children once again with less physical activity.
Then there is that whole fact and fiction section on children and obesity. Yes, genes can influence weight. Yes, some children are more likely to gain weight than others. This does not mean their future is weight issues. Proper diet and exercise can maintain a child to have a healthy weight. As far as overweight or obese children being placed on a diet immediately. Guess again, in all reality unless the child’s doctor tells you they need one do not impose that restriction on the child. Diets are not the answer for today’s children. The aim should be set at slowing down and eventually stopping the weight gain. Employ fun exercises for the children like family bike rides or hikes. Even playing with the family dog helps. Above all there is no such thing as “it’s just baby fat” they will outgrow it. Here is the reality to that thought, most children who are overweight during any course of time in preschool or elementary school will still be overweight when they hit their teen years. A lot children just do not out grow those cute pudgy cheeks.
We have to face facts here our generation is known as the “couch potato” generation, which makes me want to thank the man who had to invent the theory of a device to turn television channels. What occurred in our generation from it we managed to create a whole new generation of little potato’s. More and more children at very young ages are now obese. Who do we have to blame, no one but ourselves. We are subjecting our children to the very same diseases and conditions in which overweight and obese suffer from such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and high blood pressure. Somehow I really do not think this is the type of legacy we had in mind for our children.
As the old adage goes we learn from example. So now has come the time in our lives were we need to set the appropriate example for our children. Despite the groans I am probably going to get here, there is a lot of us that can afford to become more healthier, active and live a better lifestyle. We owe our children at least that much. To be able to live a healthy, happy lifestyle not be plagued down with medications in their adult life due to the disease and conditions caused by weight problems.
Children have different requirements than adults do for exercise. Our bodies have stopped developing and theirs have not, so care must be used when children do exercise. Believe it our not personal trainers across the country recognize the problem of obesity in America’s children today. They are trying to get parents to see the benefits that a personal trainer can provide to their child.
Personal trainers are trained in more than just exercise. When it comes to children they are extremely compassionate towards the child. They realize what we as parents sometimes forget. That kids can be cruel. Remember when you were a child there was always that bully that hung around making fun of some child. Being overweight usually made you the brunt of the playground. Do you remember gym class and running around the track or field. Remember those children that were overweight, that were the subject of the other kids who passed them by running. You may think those children just blew off the remarks but in reality not only did it hurt them emotionally it always caused pure agony. Do you think a lot of them liked being like that. The answer most likely is no. Back then we really did not have the advantages of yoga or Tia chi being endorsed for health benefits. Just being kids we had no concept of how to lose weight or for that matter even recognize the fact of being overweight is serious for our health.
Personal trainers give one on one training to the child. They are aware psychological and emotional issues the children are facing. A child’s self esteem, finding where they belong and independence is still being learned. So care must be used when dealing with children. Personal trainers understand the child and their desire to fit in with the group, they also understand that children imitate each others actions. So if a fitness routine is fun and exciting before you know it all the other children want to take part in it too. This in turn leads to better physical shape for all of them.
Let’s face it children who are overweight or obese take part in all things as other children do. This can really effect their emotional and social development. Personal training is devised for children in order to aide the child with severe weight loss problems so they can get their weight back under control. At the same time they are being educated about nutrition and the importance of a proper diet and they progress to love exercise which in turn leads them aim for being the healthiest and fittest they possibly can be.
If your still not sure about a personal trainer for your child or simply do not have the funds for one there are other options to get your child the physical activity they need.
Check local athletic organizations to see what types of programs they may have for children.
School sports is another route if your child likes field hockey encourage them to join the team or whatever sport that seems to peak their interest. Make sure it is what they enjoy not what you want them to do.
The YMCA has numerous programs available for children, youths and teens.
Youth fitness equipment which children rotate between hydraulic resistance stations and fun cardio exercise with balls, jump ropes, hula hoops and jump sticks. It is exciting for the kids and at the same time they build up their strength, flexibility, balance and receive cardiovascular conditioning. What is great about it your child is not subject to peer pressure or being intimidated. They offer Mega Mileage Club, Tread Mills, Geo Fitness Classes, Games, Sports Wall and more.
For those who are under seventeen there is teen strength training, basketball, volleyball, martial arts and more.
There are even weight loss camps that basically do not make the child feel degraded. One such camp is Wellspring. Wellspring was recognized by Consumer Digest as a main example of high quality weight loss camp that has proven effectiveness.
As they put it they are not a “boot camp”or “fat camp”they are a weight loss program that offer exciting activities. The camp offers the child a great way to meet new friends in a relaxed atmosphere where peer pressure or demeaning attitudes are not present.
