A complete lapse of wisdom prompted me to take a swan dive into a water bed when I was younger. The pain in my upper back was immediate. Water beds do not give; it was like flopping onto a slab of cement. I have paid for this foolishness with chronic cervical spine and neck pain ever since, which is sometimes aggravated by certain activities.
In my pursuit of relief, I have visited many doctors over the years who prescribed a variety of remedies from muscle relaxers to physical therapy. In frustration, I turned to chiropractic care and enjoyed the first cessation of discomfort since the day I hurt myself. However, my insurance did not cover chiropractic and the cost soon became prohibitive.
One wonderful chiropractor sold me a home traction device from Core Products. It consists of a tubular pillow and a three-pound weight bag. To me, this is a miracle invention for someone who suffers from the same type of neck and back pain as I do. This device has done more to alleviate my discomfort than any other treatment I have tried.
I bought my Core Products cervical traction system in 2004. At that time, it came with a positioning roll (tubular pillow) and a weight bag filled with sand attached to a small harness. The harness fits comfortably over the forehead and under the neck. Since the time I purchased my traction system, Core Products has substituted a bag that can be filled with water in place of the sand bag. This way the consumer can adjust the amount of weight to his or her own personal preference.
The traction system is easy to use. You lay on on your back on a bed with your head near the end. Place the positioning roll under your neck. Slip the harness over your forehead and under your neck. The weight will dangle over the edge of the bed. The pillow keeps your neck curvature static while the weight exerts a gentle pull on your head. I find this decompresses my vertebrae, giving me instant relief from the crushing pain in my spine. It is important to relax your muscles while using the system. The system should be used for only five minutes at a time to begin with, according to the chiropractor from whom I purchased it. Gradually, you can increase the amount of time you spend in traction up to twenty minutes. I found that just five to ten minutes in the morning and then again in the evening is enough to produce long-lasting pain relief. Done on a regular basis, the improvement is remarkable.
My doctor told me that over time I was losing the natural curve in my neck and the traction system would address that problem. I didn’t know when I bought it just how well it would work to relieve my aches and pains. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. There are many wonderful cervical pillows out there. But, in my opinion, a pillow is only half the equation. The weight that provides decompression is the other half of the key to real pain relief.
I have not tried the new system with the water bag, but it probably works in the same way as the sand weight. The Core Products website has a photo showing how the system is to be used. www.coreproducts.com/evolve/asp_catalog/catalog.asp
For less than the cost of one visit to most chiropractors, the Core Products Cervical Traction System can provide ongoing relief. I highly recommend this product. Be sure to consult your doctor or chiropractor before trying this or any other traction system.
