I love beef stew and when I spotted a can of Southgate Beef Stew in the one dollar items section of my local Rite aid store, I was thrilled. I decided to purchase it, try it out and write an unbiased product review all about my personal experience with it. Here is what I found out!
Southgate Beef Stew is a good food bargain, in my opinion. I purchased a fifteen ounce can for only one dollar. Each can has two servings in it. I enjoyed being able to try this stew at a low price. I do not know if this stew is normally priced over one dollar, but it is certainly budget friendly when I can get it for only one dollar.
Southgate Beef Stew has beef, water, potatoes, carrots, textured veggie protein, soy, flour, caramel color, modified food starch, tomato paste, salt, dehydrated celery, onion, sugar, caramel powder, paprika, black pepper and celery seed in it. You can prepare it on the stove top, in a sauce pan, or heat it up in the microwave. It is perfect for microwave cooking and that is how I chose to prepare it. I only had to pour the contents of the can into a microwave safe bowl, cover and heat on high for a few minutes. This stew looked pretty good! I could not wait to try it!
When I tasted Southgate Beef Stew, I liked it. It has lots of tender juicy beef in it and that fact surprised me. No beef bits, these were chunks and yummy at that. The potatoes and carrots are very tender and even though they were small in size, they were very tasty! This stew has a great blend of broth, beef and veggies. It is mild tasting, but I was impressed by it, I must admit. I rate Southgate Beef Stew four stars out of five stars. I will be buying it again. I like to serve it for a quick lunch for two. Sometimes, I add a green salad, toast or a grill cheese sandwich to it but, even served alone, it is delicious and filling.
One serving has 330 calories. 200 of those calories come from fat and you can tell that by the rich taste of this beef stew. One serving has 22 grams of total fat, 10 grams of saturated fat, 1 gram of trans fat, 30 mg’s of cholesterol, 1120 mg’s of sodium, 19 grams of total carbs, 3 grams of dietary fiber, 0 grams of sugars and 11 grams of protein. This product does contain soy. The sodium and fat content is quite high, so if you are dieting or watching your salt intake, you may want to avoid this one. This stew is a fun occasional treat for me.
I enjoyed trying Southgate Beef Stew and writing this product review about it. It makes a filling and quick lunch item for me to serve. A relative of mine also tried this stew and she did like it. She commented to me that it had a different flavor and texture than any other beef stew that she had tried. I agreed with her. I have not seen this stew in my local grocery store, only in my local Rite Aid store. I am glad that I took a chance and tried it. It is a budget winner, for sure.
