As glamorous as fashion styling may seem, it is not an easy gig. Since I have styled many people for photo shoots, fashion shows, and even evening events, I have plenty of tips on how to be successful in such a competitive industry. Here I will describe some of my top tips on successful styling.
Always be on the lookout for the next trend
While this may seem like a no brainer tip for many, a great stylist is well rounded and knows about fashion trends in more than one field. For example, even if you style on a high fashion note, it is good to know what TV shows and celebrities are influencing fashion today. This means more than looking at this month’s issue of Vogue. The fashion industry is always a step ahead of the game so it is always important to know what is popular now and in the near future.
When working with a team, be ready to improvise
I cannot tell you how many times I have worked with other stylists and models that were chronically late, image dictators, and babies. One time I had a stylist who left the ensemble for a fashion show with the models who decided they did not want to be in the show anymore that same day. Needless to say, the audience did not see what she had styled. This is why when working with any team, be ready to go with the flow and expect the unexpected. If a stylist does not agree with an image you are going for, come to some sort of agreement. If someone ends up showing up late, plan ahead for that too, especially if they have a history of being late before. Had she thought ahead of time and kept the ensembles herself, there would not have been an issue. All in all, just do not let these little imperfections ruin your day. Be prepared for things not to go exactly as planned and you should be just fine.
Always have your go to accessories
There are some trends that come and go, and then there are your classic items with much staying power. If you have some accessories that are incredibly unique and/or a classic item, always keep these items in your styling kit. There are some people who will give you a hard time about what they are wearing so it is always good to bring a few extra classic items.
Although fashion styling is a fun job, it can also be tough. It involves lots of hard work, many hours, and plenty of travel. Depending on who you are working with it can also be very stressful. With these tips I have provided for you, it should be smooth sailing. J
