Teaching is a unique experience which requires an enormous amount of patience and commitment. In my experience students respond best when they get individual attention. Unfortunately, in larger classes, this can be extremely difficult. With a little more organization I hope to provide my students with this attention and to help them help themselves.
The first way I plan to help ensure this happens in my classroom is taking better notes on my students and where they are in the class. You can’t give a student meaningful one on one time if you don’t know what their specific issues are. Knowing this much about you students always makes them feel special I find and inspires their confidence in you as a teacher. Keeping a constantly updated log of test scores and such can help you keep tabs.
Another great way to achieve this goal is to schedule in time into your teaching plan that you plan to meet with students one on one at regular intervals. These times shouldn’t be too close together because you want to allow time for changes an progress.
I also believe that allowing students opportunities to evaluate themselves and understand what their strengths and weakness can help give them more confidence. I can tell a student a million times to be proud of what they are good at but it seems to sink in better when they discover it for themselves. I want to promise my future students of the New Year that I will make sure I give them the tools more often to do this.
Another way to way to allow students to help themselves and feel good about what they know that I have used in the past and would like to plan on more is to allow students to do a little more of the teaching. Its always tempting just to tell them the answer and plow on but they get more from explaining things to other students and it helps change it up and prevent students from getting board when they hear information from other sources.
One last change I would like to see in my teaching in my classroom is just to remember to have fun. Learning is supposed to include a certain amount of creativity and spontaneity can help kids learn more than anything else. At the end of the day it’s more important that kids have fun that get perfect grades, because if they enjoy learning student will persevere and keep trying.
