“An Officer and a Gentleman” actress Lisa Blount was found dead in her home Monday morning this week. Foul play has since been ruled out, and it was determined by a local coroner that she died of natural causes. Blount suffered from a rare blood illness for most of her life, and shortly before her death the actress was complaining of neck and back pain. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week. The name of the disease from which Blount suffered is Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).
When dealing with a chronic illness like Lisa Blount, it is important to heed all warning signs, no matter how small. Something as insignificant seeming as a back ache can lead to death, and by addressing these symptoms as soon as you feel them, you may save your own life. When Blount’s mother found the actress, there was what seemed to be pooling of blood under the skin around her neck in precisely the place that she had earlier been complaining of pain.
There is no way to tell at this point if Blount had been taken to the hospital earlier if she would have lived, but there is some certainty that she did not seek immediate attention for her pain earlier in the days leading up to her death. As I mentioned earlier, when suffering from a long-term, chronic disease, anything can be a symptom. Since a person with a disease does not have a body that functions normally like a healthy individual, symptoms that may mean nothing to a healthy person may signal death for someone with a disease.
It is important if you have a long-term illness that you seek medical advice for all your symptoms no matter how small, because it could mean life or death. By ignoring symptoms, you are potentially endangering your own life. It is also important to have regular checkups and keep up to date on all information regarding your particular illness. Your doctors are there to help you; utilize their knowledge to keep yourself safe. Perhaps if Lisa Blount had seen a doctor the moment she started feeling pain, she would be alive. There is nothing to be done to bring her back at this point, but you can keep yourself safe and healthy by seeing a doctor as soon as you have symptoms.
