It seems like there have been many celebrity deaths in the recent months, and it never gets any easier to deal with. The death of a celebrity is always hard to deal with because it feels like we personally know the person through their work. This weekend, we lost another great actress who had a bright career and inspired many.
According to Monster and Critics, actress Nancy Dolman, wife of comedian and actor Martin Short has died at age 58. Dolman passed away Aug. 21, 2010, from what is believed to be a three-year fight with cancer. The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to an emergency call at the home, but no one was seen going to the hospital. As expected, Short is devastated at the loss of his wife and is mourning her loss in private. Dolman and Short had been married for over 30 years, and starred in several movies throughout her career.
Short’s bereavement is similar to that of when another half of a celebrity couple died in 2009. According to CNN, Natasha Richardson, actress and wife of actor Liam Neeson, died after a ski accident. Richardson was injured after a fall on a ski slope, and decided to return to the hotel instead of going to the hospital. She began feeling ill afterward, then an ambulance was called to transport her to a hospital. Richardson died a few days later at the hospital after test results indicated severe brain swelling and loss of brain activity.
Richardson was born into the spotlight since her mom was part of the Redgrave family, who were all involved in the entertainment business. Richardson won many awards throughout her career, and her husband Neeson was also respected in the entertainment business. Neeson decided to end the life support on Richardson after a family discussion involving their two children. Neeson showed tremendous courage to make that decision, and then took some time from acting to spend with his children. A few months after Richardson had died, Neeson was back to his job and making great movies.
I would imagine Short will probably do what Neeson did and take some personal time away from acting. Throughout the entertainment community, Short has a lot of support during his time of need and people will be there for him. Short has always seemed like a nice guy who just wants to earn a living by making people laugh. It is never easy losing a partner of 30 years, but Short will be able to get through this with the help of family and friends.
I do think that Short might have realized the possible outcome his wife might have from her cancer. As a loved one of a person who is diagnosed with cancer, you have to hope for the best but expect the worse. Cancer is a disease that can go away for a while and then come back so aggressively that it can kill you within months. Short might have made a career out of being funny, but, when it comes to cancer, there is nothing funny about it.
Short will probably take a few months off from his career to be with family during this difficult time, which is what Neeson did. When one-half of a celebrity couple dies, it is always going to be hard to go through the process of grief with people around you. If Short takes a few months away from his career to be alone, it would probably help him through the stages of the grieving process. I also think that, just like Neeson, Short will come back in a few months and make a great movie
