In the United States, the economy has been in a “slump” for quite some time now. People have had to get a little more clever about how they live their lives in order to survive. It has long been the idea that when children become adults, they move on into their own lives leaving the parents to enjoy their latter years as peacefully as possible without all the noise running about. The adult children then begin, at some point to raise their own children in separate homes. That is slowly changing though. More and more people are realizing that it is much easier to keep the entire family together under one roof and helps them beat the problems the economy has caused for us. There are a lot of advantages to adult children and their parents sharing a home though.
Advantages of parents and adult children sharing a home:
Money- The most obvious benefit of adult children and parents sharing a home is the money they will save in the process. Splitting the expenses can make things much easier for everyone. Splitting the expenses leaves everyone with more money in their pockets. Split all the household bills down the middle and you will be amazed at how much money you will save. Yes, the electric bill will likely go up along with the rest of the household bills, except rent or mortgage. However, it isn’t likely that those bills will double in the process. In any case, you will still save money on the rent/mortgage which is the biggest household expense there is.
Chores- With more people in the house, you can all split the household chores in order to get them done much faster. Each person can be responsible for a certain room in the house. It can be split up however you like. This saves everyone time so that you can all enjoy more free time either together or to do other things.
Closeness- You will find that when your family lives in such close proximity that your relationship with them will get much closer. You have to rely on one another more and when you do, you are likely going to be more open with each other. It isn’t like the parents will be raising the kids and it isn’t one person coming in to mooch off the other. It is a split responsibility with mutual respect and understanding of each other. Your relationship will be far closer when you all live together once again.
Groceries/Meal Preparation- Each of the family members can take turns grocery shopping and preparing the meals. This, again, saves a lot of time and money for all parties involved. You will also get a wider variety of foods in the mix. When children have been off on their own for a while, they come up with their own meal types and have tried new things. You will reap the benefit of that.
Nicer Home- In some cases, you could end up living in a much nicer home than you had before. It all depends on the circumstances that you are living under before you make the decision to move in as adult children with your parents. For instance, if you both sold your homes to buy a larger home to suit the size that you will need, you all end up with a lot more space.
The above are just a few of the benefits of adult children sharing a home with their parents. This is an up and coming trend as more and more people try to find ways to survive in a time when things look bleak with the economy. If you haven’t considered it and you have fallen victim to the economy, it might be time to reshape the way we think about living with the people who raised us.
