The revolution was started for many reasons. freedoms was the most dominate reason, including freedom of speech, freedom to vote, and freedom of religion. No matter what the reason was the American colonist had to be prepared for the results of the war. How will they be punished if they loose? How will they continue if they win?
In the end France helped the Americans secure favorable negotiations. The treaties were tough to come by because of Spain’s involvement. Spain would to cooperate unless they received the city of Gibraltar back from Britain. U.S. decided to meet with Britain behind France’s back. They finally established the treaty of Paris in late 1783. There were five points made in the treaty. One, U.S. would now be recognized as an independent country and get land in the Mississippi River. Two, Spain gets Florida. Three, U.S. can fish off Newfoundland. Four, British merchants can seek the money owed to them. And five, Congress recommended to states that they restore confiscated loyalist property.
Now, The Americans began a period called the Political Revolution. They began asking themselves, what do we do now? They needed to find ways to set up a republic with no monarch or aristocracy. Also they had to figure out a way to give power to the people without having an anarchy. most political experiments occurred at state level constitutions until 1787, this led to the federal Constitution in 1787. most states created legislature to rule over them but public opinion was not represented. Most states also contained “Bill of Rights”
The Article of confederation was written for America. It was written by a committee headed by john Dickenson. All states ratified it by 1777 except Maryland. it was official in 1781.
Many changes are beginning to be made. Within the common citizens was the most democratic groups. Even poorer white men are able to vote. Blacks rights are included in these changes as well. Importation of slaves has ceased in all states except for GA and SC. They had roles in the war very often, fighting for independence. They had three paths of freedom: Emancipation in north, manumission in south, and through the Revolutionary war. Woman had changes too, although their roles in the colonies did not. They helped pot in war many times, often taking their husbands line in battle or cooking.
Religion also had a difference after the war. All states now stopped tax support of churches. Thomas Jefferson writes the VA Declaration of Rights, guaranteeing free exercise of religion. He also writes VA statute of religious freedom, which said that no one can be forced to worship.
American culture also changed. The celebration and holiday, fourth of July was created and celebrated. Education was different too. They created state sponsored universities and public schools.
