The annual meeting of the UN General Assembly has been the occasion for third-world thugs to get on the podium and behave outrageously. Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not disappoint as he suggested that 9/11 was “an inside job.”
According to the New York Times, Ahmadinejad’s descent into 9/11 trutherism brought about a walkout by delegates of some of the civilized members of the UN.
“Those comments prompted at least 33 delegations to walk out, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, all 27 members of the European Union and the union’s representative, diplomats said.”
The rest of the delegates stayed and paid Ahmadinejad rapt attention.
Mind, Ahmadinejad is not the first tyrant or terrorist to use the United Nations to do a little theatrics. Yassir Arafat, in the mid-1970s, showed up with an olive branch and a gun. More recently, Hugo Chavez claimed to have smelled the lingering brimstone left by then-President George W. Bush.
Ahmadinejad’s spewing of 9/11 truther nonsense did have a method to its madness. Many in the Third World, especially the Islamic world, disbelieve the notion that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by Muslim terrorists. Clearly the United States, Israel, or both carried out the attacks in order to, as Ahmadinejad put it, boost its economic and save the “Zionist Entity.”
9/11 brought about a recession in the United States, but that did not impinge on Ahmadinejad’s narrative. Ahmadinejad very likely no more believes in 9/11 truther conspiracy theories than does anyone else. Truth did not enter into it; the story was all that mattered.
The purpose of Ahmadinejad’s speech was to try to raise his prestige in the Third World, especially in the Islamic World, and more especially back in Iran, as well as to annoy the civilized world. The 9/11 truther nonsense was also a means to distract from Iran’s human rights violations and that country’s relentless drive for nuclear weapons.
Ahmadinejad also laid bare the utter impotence of the Obama administration’s Iran policy. The Obama administration came into office upon a promise to diplomatically engage the Iranian regime “without preconditions.” In response, Ahmadinejad has repeatedly given the Obama White House the middle finger. Yet, in a display of insanity as trying the same thing over and over again hoping for a different result, the Obama administration keeps trying.
The clock is ticking to that fateful day when Iran explodes its first nuclear weapon and announces to the world that there is a new nuclear power on the Earth. The Obama administration seems helpless to stop it.
