Whether you are wanting to live more “green” or you have someone in your household who cannot tolerate the heavy scents from the sprays, there are alternative options that you can use. Air fresheners and deodorizers do smell great but look at the label. Do you know what those ingredients are? They are used so widely and you might not have problems with allergies at this point but prolonged use of any one of these ingredients may cause you harm in the future. I do not advise using air fresheners and deodorizers around babies and toddlers. Also, some elderly might react badly to the smell and the chemicals that are used in these products.
Dried potpourri is a great choice. You can find potpourri at most mass merchandisers, homeopathic and aromatherapy specialty shops. You can also easily make your own if you have access to wonderful smelling flowers. Purchase a book or search the Internet for making your own dried potpourri.
Some homeopathic and aromatherapy specialty shops will have non-aerosol, all-natural room deodorizers. These are made with ingredients that are better for the environment and most people should be able to tolerate them.
Purchase and take care of houseplants. Have one in each room. They are natural odor eliminators and make great decorative pieces as well. Houseplants are also great for the environment. If you are not good at maintaining plants talk with the sales associate at the lawn and garden center or nursery about low-maintenance plants.
Place flowers and herbs in vases and use them as an alternative. Roses, lemon verbena and lavender are all great choices.
Two old stand-by’s that most people know about. 1. Baking soda absorbs odors. 2. Use spices in a pan of water and let simmer on your stove.
If none of these work for you then eliminate the odor problems. Keep your home free of trash and food scraps. Take them out once a day if that is the culprit. Vacuum more often and when the weather is nice, open the windows to allow fresh air in. Keeping your home clean will eliminate a lot of the odors.
