When you think about the numerous people that have lost their jobs and lost health benefits, a Free Medical Clinic might sound like a miracle, because insurance costs can be quite costly.
The Genesee County FREE Medical Clinic staff includes more than 100 volunteer nurses and doctors.
In 1991 the clinic opened, providing health services for uninsured patients age 18-64. There was a network of 41 volunteer doctors and almost 30 nurses. A social worker and fitness room was also available. These FREE clinics are great relationships for helping the community.
A National Mail survey was done of all known free clinics in the United States. The results showed that 1.8 million individuals were provided care annually, accounting for 3.5 million medical and dental visits.
According to the National Institute of Health a student-run free clinic did a study to evaluate diabetes care quality. They further stated that in most areas the care was comparable to or better than averages previously reported for uninsured populations.
Dr. Oz sponsored a Free Health Clinic in Houston, Texas. He indicated that Houston, Texas showed the greatest need and had the highest uninsured in the nation. They saw patients for 12 hours.
Those that have their medical insurance through employers sometimes take for granted that they are receiving this. They sometimes do not even realize that if they had to purchase their own medical Insurance, they possibly just could not afford it. Medical Insurance through providers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield or Health Plus usually cost less through an employer than paying for it individually. Employers can do group rates, thus making the cost somewhat less.
Dr. David Smith founded a FREE medical clinic in the 1960’s. He founded the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics which provided service to more than 34,000 people in Northern California. Then Free clinics spread quickly to other cities.
More than 50 Free Medical Clinics in Genesee County are scheduled to receive a portion of $1million from Blue Cross Blue Shield.
