Yes I was in a very bad car accident. Yes it was caused by a drunk running a red light at 60 miles per hour and , as you can see by the photo above, we got crushed. It was the Twins playing the Yankees, McCain against Obama, Custer against the Indians. We didn’t even know what hit us. Yes they did bring body bags to the scene.
And yes, I was coaching a youth baseball team and they were all innocent and none of them deserved what they got that night. But -look out pithy observation ahead – who gave you a guarantee of perfection when you were born?
And I broke a lot of bones and my back and was in a coma and sometimes I wake up at night with headlights bearing down on me and get up and get a glass of bourbon and then ,when I stop shaking, get back to bed. And sometimes I feel like crying out of nowhere. But I turn off the Cubs and feel better.
But just because I ran into some bad luck or bad luck ran into me, I understand that life happens, and I cannot keep blaming the world for what happened and I can’t argue that no one can drink. That would be saying that everyone is irresponsible, that everyone gets in a car and drives drunk, that no one takes personal responsibility
And that is why I do not like the 21 year drinking law we have in the United States. First, it seems very vindictive. We are not letting 18 year olds drink, because we think they will kill people and we are blaming them for every kid killed by a drunk driver. Look I would rather have an 18 year old drink and drive. At least they have reflexes.
You know who we shouldn’t let drink and drive? All those old people standing in line at Walgreens waiting for their drugs so they can go home and drink, take the drugs, then put on their bifocals and go DRIVE to go meet Lucile to play bridge. Those are the ones we need to keep off the road, not the young drivers.
Also there is no logic at all behind the 21 year old drinking law. Somewhere, someone thinks that 18 years old are not mature enough to drink? Look, go to any state during deer hunting season and you will see 13 year old kids carrying guns. So we say they can’t have a beer until they are 21, but it is okay for them to carry a gun at 13?
You know why you can carry a gun when you’re a kid. Because it has been beat into your head by your father, your uncle, your brother and your grandfather that a gun is a HUGE responsibility and they make you take gun training classes and more gun training classes, until they are sure you won’t kill yourself or anyone else.
Hmm, wouldn’t that be a better approach than banning 18 year olds from having a beer? Just like a gun license or driving license, they have to get a drinking license. And take classes and take tests and prove they are mature enough to handle a beer.
But here is how a law is made. You and I never go stand outside a congressman’s office. People who want vengeance do. Their child has been killed by an 18 year old kid who was drinking and they want to punish all 18 year olds.
Bullshit – and I can say that as I have been through all of that.
But I was mature and realized I can’t punish the world for the pain that one drunk driver put me and other families through. I just wish that MADD would grow up and realize the same thing. Because right now, with the 21 year old drinking law, we are assuming EVERY 18 year old is irresponsible. That if any 18 year old drinks, he will drink, get behind the wheel and kill a kid.
No you can blame every 18 year old for the actions of a few. I don’t and I have every reason to. But life is about NOT being vindictive, it is about moving on and realizing that the majority of people are good and we can’t blame every 18 year old for the actions of a few.
So let’s throw out the current drinking law and let’s stop sending an 18 year old to jail for having a beer. Or are we saying we are a Christian Nation, but we have forgotten how to forgive?
