It isn’t really a huge surprise, unless of course you have been on another planet for the last several weeks, but American Idol has finally made it official. Two new judges will replace Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi.
Along with original judge Randy Jackson, the new judges will be Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith and Jennifer Lopez. According to reports, Fox is trying to appeal to a younger audience. Huh? So let’s hire a 62-year old rock star with substance abuse issues and a 41 year old singer/actress who quite honestly has been able to focus on her twins and her husband because her career isn’t what it used to be. That should be a ratings booster.
Fox is desperate to reinvent American Idol for season 10. The last few seasons have showed a steady decline in ratings.
It is no surprise that after a while, people got bored with the whole process. Simon, Paula and Randy were the original judges of American Idol and once Paula left, the show did suffer. Now without Simon, it will lose many more viewers. If anyone would even try to imitate Simon’s unique way of brutal honesty it would seem like a poor imitation of the original. As far as Paula Abdul’s judging, well, towards the end of her Idol reign, she often was scattered.
Fox is trying to appeal to younger viewers but honestly, how many of their target audience are fans of Aerosmith? Jennifer Lopez is not exactly someone who would bring in younger viewers either. Musically, she has not done much to appeal to younger fans the last few years.
American Idol is a show that had its day but that day may be over.
