Casey James, the third-place finisher in this past season (number 9) of American Idol, signed a recording contract with Sony Music Nashville this week. According to Brian Mansfield at “Idol Chatter,” he will be recording on the 19 Recordings/BNA Records label. Casey James and Sony made the signing official with an announcement Tuesday.
In the press release, James said:
“Some dreams in life are only just that … dreams. All my life I have wanted this and now my dream has come true. Words can’t describe how thankful and blessed I am for the opportunity to give back to all those who have supported me. I’m going to work hard to make the best album possible! I want to thank my Momma for making me go to Denver. Look out! I’m Nashville bound!”
And the tall, blond blues guitarist should thank his mother — profusely. It was his mother’s prompt to audition in Denver for American Idol, to take a chance and try out for a show he admittedly never watched while playing and performing in his home state of Texas, that saw Casey James star go on the ascendant. After his audition, the judges were split on whether or not to send him through, but guest judge Victoria Beckham and then-regular judge Kara DioGuardi posited that, with his looks, he was the “total package.” They asked him to take off his shirt and Kara DioGuardi had to relive her bedazzled comments for the rest of the season. James went through to Hollywood and into the American Idol Top 10. He saw his journey end just short of the finale.
But he wasn’t bitter or disappointed with his third-place finish, complimenting both Lee Dewyze (the ultimate American Idol Season 9 winner) and Crystal Bowersox in an interview with People magazine right after getting kicked off the show. He said that he was surprised to find out how much the three finalists had in common, basically liking “anything old” in terms of musical styles.
In the same press release, Sony Music Nashville Chairman and CEO Gary Overton stated:
“We at Sony Music Nashville are incredibly excited about signing Casey James. I flew to New York to see him ‘live’ with the American Idol Tour, and I was blown away with his voice, guitar playing and stage presence … and so were the thousands of fans in the amphitheater. He has honed his skills as a showman with his years of performing live on stage! I can’t wait to get him into the studio to begin recording his debut album.”
Back in May, People asked Casey James what kind of album he would like to record. He said:
“I would like it to be a good mixture of a lot of the stuff that I love and we’ll see what that ends up being in the end. I love country and blues, and rock, and soul, and folk. It just needs to be a good mix. I don’t want to go straight, hardliner one way or another.”
Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox signed contracts within days of the American Idol Season 9 finale. Their first albums are tentatively due out before the end of the year.
Casey James’ first effort is expected to be released in 2011.
