It was a night of firsts on this season of ‘America’s Got Talent’ results show. One of the groups called to the stage did not make it to the finals, not any of them. In another twist one entire group made it through. This certainly got you on the edge of your seat. There were a lot of excellent performances from the guest stars in music and stand-up comedy. One more week of semi-finals and it is on to the finals. Here’s how the night shaped up in its proper order.
ArcAttack, Dan Sperry, Future Funk and Kristina Young
I thought for certain ArcAttack would be going through, though they are not my favorite. That ghoulish girl was still acting crazy. The camera was shown on Nick, which they’ve never done before when he makes the announcement. Instead, he said “This is very strange. None of the acts are going through.” I could hardly believe what I just heard. All four of the acts were going home. You could tell the studio audience was stunned. That meant there were eight acts left and only three would go home since they were choosing the Top 5 for the Finals.
Here was an act from last year’s season of America’s Got Talent who made it to the finals, but did not win. They’ll soon have the opening of their own Vegas show at the MGM Grand. These guys were intense. Some of them were banging on the rungs of ladders as percussion instruments while climbing it and twirling their sticks. It was exhilarating to watch. I loved watching them on Season 4 and they were just as entertaining Wednesday night.
My favorite type of comedy, besides satirical, is impressions. I love when comedians do impersonations of famous people whether they dress up like them or do only their voices. Fallon did a non-stop array of vocal impressions on other comedians that was simply remarkable and hilarious. He gave Sharon Osbourne a stopwatch and every ten seconds she would tell him to change to another comedian.
Jimmy Fallon’s act comprised of Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Norm McDonald, Gilbert Gottfried, PeeWee Herman, Jeff Foxworthy, Eddie Murphy, Larry the Cable Guy, Stephen Wright and Adam Sandler. I never realized how good of an impressionist Jimmy Fallon is. I’m looking forward to seeing him host the Emmys this Sunday night.
AscenDance & Anna and Patryk
Now I had no idea what would happen next. Would both of them go through to the next round or would only one? As it turned out it was back to business as usual. Only one act made it through and the other’s journey ended. Congratulations to Anna and Patryk, my favorite dancing couple. They were the first act to make it to the Finals. If they keep it up with their fiery performances I could see them in the Top 5 of the Finals.
I’m not very familiar with this singer, though I know she is a huge international pop star in several continents. I’ve seen her perform on other shows. Of course Kylie was promoting her latest album and newest single for the American audience. She’s definitely a nice change of pace from the other cookie-cutter pop singers.
Michael Grimm, Prince Poppycock and Taylor Matthews
At least two acts had to be going through just based on their fan following alone. One was definitely out in my opinion. When Nick said one act would be going through to the next round I knew there would be another switch in the results. As it turned out all three of the acts were going through to the finals. I’m truly happy for Taylor Matthews, because he clearly has a lot of fans in the audience every time he performs. It was a definite no-brainer Michael Grimm and Prince Poppycock were shoo-ins.
Antonio Restivo, Christina and Ali & Connor Doran
The judge’s choice would certainly be the standard routine. One act leaves and the other two’s fate are decided by the judges. What I did not expect at all was seeing Antonio Restivo be the first one to leave. He looked very stunned when his name was called out. I don’t think he was expecting that at all. Quite frankly, I thought it would be Connor Doran. When it came down to the last second it was Sharon who had to make the final decision. Time was truly getting close to the end of the show. Finally, it was the sister duo, Christina and Ali in the finals.
Next week the remaining Top 12 semi-finalists are: Studio One Young Beast Society, Fighting Gravity, Murray, Alice Tan Ridley, Maestro Alexander Bui, Nathaniel Kenyon, Haspop, Debra Romer, Jeremy Vanschoonhoven, Michael Lipari and Ashleigh Dejon, Michael Grasso and Jackie Evancho. I’m looking forward to seeing one of my favorite acts Haspop along with the aerialists – Michael Lipari and Ashleigh Dejon & Murray the phenomenal magician.
