Mary Mays is a secretary for the Division of Fine and Performing Arts at Mid America Nazarene University in Olathe, KS.
But she is also the volunteer director for the Special Pops Chorus. This is a group consisting of special needs children and adults. These singers perform at different venues during the year. They are especially active during the Christmas season.
Local businesses have been recipients of their melodious delights with their Christmas caroling. They have also performed at the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
As part of her duties, she selects the music that will be sung along with directing them on a weekly basis during the school year. She also travels with the group when they perform.
Imagine how surprised she was when a local Fox 4 news reporter showed up at her job to present her with a special Fox 4 Pay it Forward award. According to the article, “The award is given weekly by the television station to help bring uplifting stories to the public”.
It is no doubt that you, Mary Mays are an inspiration to this choir that you direct and to so many others.
And because of this demonstration of care and compassion, I honor you as Today’s American Shero.
