Tim King believes in motivating children in getting good grades in school. He was fortunate in that he came from a family environment where education was an important part of life.
The Urban Prep Academies was the brainchild of Mr. King along with a group of African-American educational, business and civic leaders.
According to an article in People Magazine, “When Tim King opened the first all-male charter high school in 2006, only 4 percent of his freshman class could read at grade level. With its longer day, uniforms and focus on higher education, Urban Prep achieved what some said was impossible: All 130 students from its first class are now in college”.
This is absolutely amazing. I just love it when the naysayers are proven wrong when it comes to a child’s ability to overcome obstacles and to be a successful student.
The Urban Prep Academy is composed of three units so far in the Chicago area. These include the Urban Academy for Young Men, Englewood Campus that opened in 2006. In 2009 the Urban Prep Academy for Young Men, East Garfield Park was opened. A third academy was slated to be open this year in the South Shore Community.
The Board of Directors is comprised of quite an impressive list of people and businesses that are behind the mission of this academy. According to their website, “The mission of Urban Prep is to provide a comprehensive, high-quality college preparatory education to young men that results in our graduates succeeding in college”.
Tim King you have been a beacon of hope to so many young male students. You have given them encouragement and inspiration to be upstanding students and responsible citizens. They are certain to reach high pinnacles of success.
And because of this I proudly announce you as Today’s American Hero. Keep up the good work in the training of our future leaders.
