One of my favorite wineries is the Washingtonville, NY based “Brotherhood Winery.” I have been there on many occasions for particular events, tastings, and informative tours that visitors to the area may want to consider experiencing for themselves.
What follows is a brief description of what visitors to “Brotherhood Winery” can expect including my personal recommendation on wine selection.
The winery tours at “Brotherhood Winery” tend to last anywhere from 30 minutes to a full hour. The tour takes visitors through what are considered to be America’s oldest, hand excavated wine cellars.
Wine tastings are divided into two separate categories; varietals and traditional. Varietals tend to be drier and less sweet than the traditional wines. There is a separate charge for participation in each wine tasting category.
Insider’s Tip on Wine Selection
Over the years I have visited the winery and sampled many of Wine Master Baeza’s wines. My personal “Brotherhood Winery” favorite is the “Holiday Spiced Wine.” Each winter I traditionally buy several bottles of the “Holiday Spiced Wine” to either give as gifts or serve with our family’s holiday meals.
Priced at $8 a bottle, I find that the “Holiday Spiced Wine” is pleasing on the palate and has a wonderfully enticing bouquet. It is a smooth, red wine with undertones of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and allspice.
I have also found that it pairs well with my family’s traditional holiday meal of Cuban style pernil with rosados rojos y arroz.
The on-site French inspired “Vinum Café” features a variety of dining options; fine, al fresco casual and a Tapas wine bar. Items on the five course menu range in price from $6.95 for an appetizer upward of $24 for an entrée.
The “Vinum Café” is open Wednesday through Sunday from Noon until 8:00 pm and offers special events throughout the year such as “candlelight dinners under the stars.”
Tasting and Tour Fees
There are several package alternatives that visitors can select from. Guided tours without the wine tasting can be purchased for $6 per person. Each wine tasting session is $5 per person when purchased separately. If one prefers there is a package price that is also available.
A $10 guided tour and tasting package includes the guided winery tour, participation in one wine tasting category and a souvenir “Brotherhood Winery” wine glass.
Hours of Operation
“Brotherhood Winery” is open year round and maintains seasonal hours of operation. During the months of January through March the winery is open from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm Friday through Sunday.
April through December it is open from 11:00 am until 5:00pm Sunday through Friday and from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm on Saturdays.
The last tour of the day is usually given at 3:30 pm and the last wine tasting of the day tends to be at 4:00 pm. Hours do vary however, so it is best to call in advance of one’s trip to confirm all details.
